Australia street and facility OziExplorer namesearch database ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Please email all updates to jt@techniciansyndrome.org ************************************************** Changes made, relating to data since last release: ************************************************** Changes to be made in next release: - Updated Streets, Localities, and General Facilities lists. - Streets, Localities and General Facilities lists are no longer split into separate states. This has been done to implement easier import into POI_db_creator. This utility enables user-supplied points of interest to be imported into the Magellan mapsend utility. - Berrima (NSW) had two sets of street entries, one correct, the other very, very incorrect. Removed the invalid entries. - Added a new list "Geek Shops". Contains Dick Smith Electronics (including franchise and resellers), Jaycar (including resellers), Tandy and some other entries. Useful for the electronic geeks among us who travel heavily in the gadget department, and need to know where to buy spares and such while on the road. There are two databases, sorted under Category "Electronics Retailers" and by Vendor. Please note that the exact location of all entries may not be available, so while the entries will be on the correct street, they might not be at the correct position. Please email me corrections where applicable. 2005/03/28 - Added the Australian Post Code list. - Added over 350 new railway stations around the country. - Minor positional correction to Bell railway station (NSW) - Re-structured facility lists. Lists are no longer split up by state into separate files. Most state data is supplied is one large file, and where available, also categorised by state. NOTE: Not all lists have been complied like this yet, I still have to do the streets, and the General Facilities. This has been done to implement easier import into POI_db_creator. This utility enables user-supplied points of interest to be imported into the Magellan mapsend utility. - Added and updated several fuel outlets in NSW. - Re-structured fuel list. There are three NST database files, categorised by Category "Fuel Bowsers", State and "Vendor". - Re-structured train list There are two NST database files, categorised by State and Category "Railway Stations" and State. The coverage image has been updated, and is now supplied in JPEG format. - Re-structured UHF repeater list. There are three NST database files categorised by Category "UHF CB radio repeaters", Channel and State. 2004/08/12 - No core data changes, only cosmetics of street names. Thus, the dates on the host web page are not changed. There was an old version software library I was using by mistake- this was probably the case for at least a couple of months, but had just become aware of it. Only the Streets and General Facilities archives have been affected. 2004/08/01 - Major restructure of all data. Core data has not otherwise changed (unless otherwise specified), only the way it is represented. Now, all NST files are in Lat/Long format, in the WGS84 datum. Also, where (street) data was split into 'city', 'town' and 'Additional' segments, all are now combined into one. All data is sorted by name first, then sorted by category. So now, if searching for a street that has many entries, all suburbs/towns will appear in alphabetical order. - Removed 1-Rcd001 (Rockdale) UHF CB radio repeater due to invalid location (TAS) - Added railway stations between Croydon and Normanton (QLD) - Added Birru railway station (near Rosewood, QLD) 2004/07/11 - Yarrawonga (NSW) streets and facilities entries were stuffed up. Corrected. - Added several fuel outlets to NSW. 2004/06/28 - Added over 50 new streets & roads to various towns in Tasmania. - Further positional corrections to Deloraine and George Town (TAS). 2004/06/20 - Added several fuel outlets (NSW). 2004/06/13 - Added several fuel outlets, and corrected a couple (NSW). 2004/05/26 - Added instructions on how to extract Gazetteer place names from the Auslig/Natmap CDs. - Added over 40 new fuel outlets (SA) 2004/05/10 - Corrected location for Racecourse Beach Resort Big4 holiday park. (NSW) [Alan D] 2004/04/19 - Added several railway stations, and moved a couple for accuracy. (WA & NSW) - A couple of spelling corrections in NSW Train stations. (NSW) - Incorrectly had perth facility data in place of queensland. (QLD) [Rodney Nichols] 2004/04/04 - Added the Sydway grid. 2003/03/06 - Added a bunch of fuel bowsers around Sydney, Katoomba, Lithgow, Bathurst, Cowra, Young and almost everywhere inbetween. (NSW) - Added a number of wineries around Cowra 2003/02/25 - Added a couple of disused railway stations around the northern edge of Adelaide (SA) - Updated Big4 Holiday Parks for 2004: (VIC) Several minor positional corrections, one removal. (NSW) Several minor positional corrections, several ratings changes. (QLD) One ratings change. (SA) No changes. (WA) One ratings change. (NT) No changes. (TAS) Several ratings changes, one removal. - Please note: The ratings stated within this list are taken from the official Big4 list, or, where a rating is not available, I have looked at other locations on the web where the rating IS stated. Thus, the ratings stated here, may not always reflect the official hotel ratings body's rating. - The two removals above have been added to, or replaced existing accomodation entries within the general facilities list. (VIC & TAS) - Whoopsie. All additional facilitiy entries for NSW had brackets "()" placed after the name. This was done because *some* entries (not all!) had text that was going to be enveloped in these brackets. Now the brackets will only occur if they actually have something to envelope. (NSW) 2004/02/21 - Removed a few more duplicates I had missed in the last fix (NSW) - Expanded "Mt ..." to "Mount ..." for streets and localities (All States) - "St ..." (short for Saint) should now appear as "ST ..." (All States) - Added Australian Mountain Peaks and Huts [David J Neale] - Removed duplicates from Ballarat (VIC) - Fixed a problem that may have incorrectly placed facilities under wrong categories. This was _supposed_ to have been fixed 27th Jan, but there was a scripting whoopsie which meant the changes would not have taken effect. - Corrected existing, and added several more accomodation entries for Cowra (NSW). - The UHF repeater list (by channel) now has the state within brackets in the name field, previously, it was shown without brackets. - The fuel list (by vendor) now has the vendor in upper case. Previously, only the first letter of the vendor name was uppercase. (no additional data) - The Big4 Holiday Parks list contains two new files. As well as the existing "Big4 Holiday Parks" Feature code, the new files are sorted by Star ratings and State. The data is still 2003, the 2004 Big4 Parks will not be released for another month or so. - Corrected accuracy of a number of streets in the melbourne metro area. (VIC) - Added several Railway stations to Melbourne. (VIC) 2004/02/04 - Added railway stations to Tasmania. - Added railway stations to Northern Territory. - Added railway stations to Western Australia - Included a coverage map for train stations. - Added some streets & roads around Darwin, Tennant Creek, Alice Springs (NT). - Several railway stations were mistakenly included in the suburban data of several cities, these have been removed. Also moved a large chunk of the existing Adelaide stations due to a calibration oversight. - Added as many railway stations to Queensland as I could find. - Added roads and trails around Oberon (NSW) area. - Added the Hampton Halfway Hotel Motel 2004/01/27 - Added as many Railway Stations as I could find for NSW [John Tserkezis] The accuracy of many in the outback could be off by several hundred metres, they were entered using the most accurate maps I have of the areas in question. - Added and corrected several fuel outlets in Sydney (NSW) [John Tserkezis] - Added several facilities to Rapid Bay and Aldinga (SA) [Phil Kernick] - Added some streets and facilities in Batchelor (NT) [John Tserkezis] The accuracy of these points may be questionable, as they have been added through a detailed map of which I have no correct calibration information for, but they should be within a coo-ee (I hope!). - I've made a minor change to the way my facility points were processed, it is possible the facility category is more accurately represented now. Previously, the place name may have possibly affected the facility category. This may affect all states. - I am progressively adding country streets to outback Victoria and NSW to areas that have not already been coverd. This will take a substanitial amount of time. From the looks of things, they number in the several thousands. 2004/01/12 - Corrected and added a number of streets around Callala Bay (NSW) - Corrected and added a number of streets around Sussex Inlet (NSW) - Removed some false, inaccurate and duplicate streets around Nowra (NSW) - Corrected accuracy of some streets in the Bulli (NSW) area. - Corrected accuracy of some streets in the Central Coast (NSW) area. - Corrected accuracy of some streets in the Newcastle (NSW) area. - Added a number of maps to the UBD reference grid (Sydney, Blue Mountains) - Found a bug in one of my utilities that searches for unique locality names. It was caused by long locality names, as such, many localities were not being added to the list. Only NSW should have had problems, as I've recently added some long names there. - Added Marcus Street, Picton area (NSW) 2004/01/03 - Added a number of fuel outlets in the Shoalhaven (NSW) area. - Added a number of streets in the Shoalhaven (NSW) area. - Added a number of facilities in the Shoalhaven (NSW) area. - Corrected accuracy of some streets in Albion Park Rail (NSW) - The Oaks Flats (NSW) train station position has been moved slightly. - For the Special Interest Facilities 'Train Stations', 'UHF Repeaters', and 'Fuel Bowsers', a number of variants of the same data has been included. - Added a UBD co-ordinate page to the Wollongong directory. 2003/12/24 - Added many more streets and facilities to NSW, VIC, QLD, SA, WA. - The Sydney and Canberra entries are now combined into one file. (Canberra used to be separated). - Moved position of some streets that were inaccurate (several states). - Added a few more fuel bowsers (NSW) - A few positional corrections for Bargo and Yanderra (NSW) (Streets and facilities) - Added some streets and facilities around the Homebush Bay stadium area. - Added the UBD map grid list. There are more details within the archive. 2003/12/07 - Added some more fuel outlets in NSW. - Removed duplicate streets around Wilton (NSW). 2003/12/05 -Will the oil companies ever quit it? It appears that Coles (the supermarket chain) was getting jealous that Woolworths had a girlfriend, so now they're jumping into bed with Shell, offering a 4c discount with an impossible-to-get coupon or something stupid like that. Just like Woolworths. Either that, or Coles is sleeping with Woolworths anyway. Who cares? I certainly don't. Regardless, all the shells have been renamed to "Coles Express". I've only done it for NSW and ACT so far, so till I get verification that this stupidity is happening in other states as well, I'll leave it at that. 2003/11/29 -Added several fuel bowsers to the Sydney (NSW) area. 2003/11/28 -The Shell at the corner of Rookwood road and Brunker road Yagoona (NSW), no longer exists. -Added an Ampol fuel bowser facility entry to Marulan (NSW) -Moved two Victorian fuel outlets from the NSW list where they were accidently placed, back into Victoria. -Renamed "Canberra Holiday Retreat" to "Eaglehawk Holiday Park" (NSW) -Spelling correction, Orrvale Road, Shepparton (Victoria) -Added Merool Lane, Moama (Victoria) -Added Riverfront Road, Loxton (South Australia) 2003/11/21 Victoria -Removed duplicate streets from Horsham (Victoria) -Removed duplicate streets from Mildura (Victoria) -Removed duplicate streets from Moe (Victoria) -Removed duplicate streets from Portland (Victoria) -Removed duplicate streets from Traralgon (Victoria) -Removed duplicate streets from Warrnambool (Victoria) -Removed duplicate streets from Wodonga (Victoria) -Added streets for Orbost (Victoria) 2003/11/20 New South Wales -Corrected two streets that had no town marked. 2003/11/19 All States -Oh dear. I had put in a bunch of streets for Berry, till I realised they were OK after all. Result is most if not all streets in Berry were duplicated. 2003/10/10 Victoria -Please note that many town streets have been removed. They WILL be put back, I've just found them to be so inaccurate, that there was no point in leaving them in for now. I will be doing more victorian towns after I take a break (too much on my plate). -Changes were made to the following towns: Streets and/or facilities were either added to, corrected or created. Changes were made to the following towns: Streets were either added to, corrected or created. Airleys Inlet/Fairhaven, Apollo Bay, Ararat, Avoca, Bairnsdale, Koondrook 2003/09/09 All States. Removed any "?" entries from the fuel bowsers facilities data. Only known valid verified entries are shown now. Found a problem with the NST files that were created, they falsely specified the grid type in the header. (result was all locations were wrong). 2003/09/08 All states. Where streets for towns had been compiled separately, now all these entries are put together into one file. It makes it a little less convenient looking at it from a data management point of view, but more convenient for users when compiling data. The __Suburbs__ type has changed name to __Localities__ to more correctly describe its new purpose, which now lists suburbs as well as towns, and signifies to the user that more streets are available at said town, suburb or locality etc. The new __Localities__ type contains automagically generated town entries. This is done by looking at all street entries, and creating a location that is an average of all the individual streets within any given suburb, locality or town. This would place this entry at about the center of where all the streets are located. This procedure creates possible duplicates (albeit at slightly different locations)- I have hopefully removed all duplicates, but if you find any, let me know. 2003/10/07 New South Wales. Nancarrow Lane, Ryde, does not exist. Again, I had known about this for a while but had forgotten all about it. 2003/08/31 New South Wales. Added more fuel outlets. 2003/08/27 All States. I have separated the suburbs from the Towns Streets data, so those who want the suburbs all in one file can now do that. This only applies to data layout, not the data content itself, so only users of the NST source files will notice any changes. 2003/08/27 New South Wales. Removed Enfield RSL club, Enfield. 2003/08/21 Tasmania. Non-GPS verified corrections to the town of Richmond Tasmania. GPS verified correction to Richmond Gaol, Richmond Tasmania. Added Hotel Grand Chancellor, Hobart Tasmania (Accomodation). Added Salamanca Markets, Hobart Tasmania (Shopping). Added Elizabeth St Mall, Hobart Tasmania (Shopping). Added Shot Tower, Hobart Tasmania (Place of interest). 2003/08/11 New South Wales. Accomodation facilities: The "Alpine Gables Apartments" Jindabyne location has been shifted to more correctly represent its location. More fuel outlets have been added. 2003/08/03 New South Wales, Accomodation facilities. The "Sydney Vista Hotel" is now called the "Corus Hotel Sydney". The "Parkroyal At Darling Harbour" is now called the "Crowne Plaza Darling Harbour". 2003/07/31 New South Wales, Fuel Bowser facilities. Added more entries. 2003/07/27 Queensland, Suburbs Data: Some suburbs had brackets needlessly placed around the name, this has been corrected. This was actually a software problem that affected all states, but only QLD had some entries that 'broke' it. 2003/07/27 New South Wales, Regentville Road, Mulgoa. This street doesn't actually exist. I knew about this one for some time, but forgot to correct it. *************************************** Changes effected in the Release 3 list: *************************************** New South Wales: Berry (GPS verified corrections) Fuel Bowsers (New entries) Oberon (New addition. Note some streets may not be in their correct positions because the map I have was not accurate, and I only had 5 minutes to survey the area...) Shoalhaven Area: (Many streets and tracks added to the general Shoalhaven area) Nowra: (Facilities: City Centre Hotel Nowra has been removed) Speed Cameras: (Many changes and additions, see notes) Victoria Fuel Bowsers (Has been modified to be consistant with other fuel points. Also added many SafeWay outlets) Shepparton/Mooroopna: (Non-GPS verified corrections) Speed cameras: (Added speed camera list for Melbourne) Western Australia: Fuel Bowsers (Removed, unable to effectively maintain due to constant changes) There have been changes to the speed camera locations for New South Wales. The camera locations are no longer in the NameSearch database, but now in waypoint form. The description of the waypoint spells out the speed and direction of the camera, and the name of the waypoint contains the suburb. This makes it more useful for those users who load the waypoints, and use proximity zones to automatically warn you of an upcoming camera. The spelling of some words have been modified to suit text-to-speech software, and to enable delays so it sounds more natural. The waypoint names are set out thus: "Speed Camera (pause) [speed] (pause) [direction]" Where speed is "sixty", "seventy" etc, direction is North/south/east/westbound. Note also that some points are effectivly duplicated, where the camera is located in a tunnel (where you'll loose GPS lock), there are extras in this case, one at the entrance of the tunnel, and if it operates in both directions, at both ends of the tunnel. I've left the actual location within the tunnels intact, the proximity distance has been reduced to almost nothing for these, to prevent false triggers if you're in the area above the tunnel. I have also added the proximity attachment "sc.wav" for use with CE devices, or if you are not using Travel Mate for speed camera notification. A sample SC.WAV file is supplied that says "Speed Camera". The Western Australia Fuel Bowswers project is now a mission aborted. A local has informed me that there are that many changes happening that it would be a full time job to maintain it. I simply don't have the time, and not living there to check and update myself doesn't help either. *************************************** Changes effected in the Release 2 list: *************************************** New South Wales: Sydney (Spelling corrections) Train Stations (New entry in train stations facility category) Fuel Bowsers (New category for facilities) Speed Cameras (New entries for facilities} Barham/Koondrook (added to NSW data, this NSW/VIC border town only had data in vic) Echuca/Moama (copied to Vic data, this NSW/VIC border town had better data on the NSW side) Tasmania: Deloraine (Non-GPS verified corrections) George Town (Non-GPS verified corrections) Richmond (Non-GPS verified corrections) Western Australia: Train Stations (New category for facilities) Fuel Bowsers (New category for facilities) Cape Burney (Non-GPS verified corrections) Dunsborough (Non-GPS verified corrections) Eagle Bay (Non-GPS verified corrections) Esperance (Non-GPS verified corrections) Geraldton (Non-GPS verified corrections) Guilderton (Non-GPS verified corrections) Hyden (Non-GPS verified corrections) Newdegate (Non-GPS verified corrections) Quindalup (Non-GPS verified corrections) Tom Price (Non-GPS verified corrections) Victoria: Orbost (GPS Verified corrections) Queensland: Cooroy (removed duplicates) Dalby (Spelling corrections) Gaynday (GPS Verified corrections) Gold Coast (removed duplicates) Hughenden (Spelling corrections) Mount Isa (Spelling corrections & non-GPS verified corrections) Sunshine Coast (removed duplicates} Toowoomba (removed duplicates) South Australia: Mildura (Removed. Yes, Mildura is actually in victoria) Changes applied to all states: In the last release, if a category could not be determined for any facilities, they would be placed into a category called "Unknown". The vast majority of these 'unknowns' turned out to be places of interest. Now, all of these unknowns are placed in the Places of Interest category. So if you get any weird entries that don't quite seem like they fit, now you know why. I thought it would be a better idea to have a few points that don't fit the category, rather than a "messy" and rather full unknown category. Also, various spelling errors were corrected across all states. This includes street names, as well as spelling of suburbs/towns. You will find the suburbs and towns are consistent, and have no grundged entries now. (or at least they shouldn't) There are major changes in the streets NameSearch structure since the last release. For the major cities, the suburb used to be listed after the street name within the 'Place Name' column. The 'Type' column in NameSearch would display the city (Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane etc). For towns that were not originally categorised by any major city, used to have the town name in the 'Type' NameSearch column. Now, ALL streets are categorised by suburb/town. The 'Place Name' column in NameSearch now contains the street name only, the 'Type' column contains the suburb or town. In addtion to all the individual suburb categories, there is one new unique entry "__suburbs__" which contains all the suburb entries by themselves. I've made these changes so the streets are listed more consistently when searching by suburb or town. Just in case anyone asks, I will not be putting any post codes adjacent to the suburb names for country town data. I originally started to do this, but due to the incredible variation of suburb names and post codes that weren't listed by Australia Post, as well as with dealing with duplicate names in different areas, meant many still had to be done manually. Extensive cross-checking also had to be done to verify that everything was correct (and much of it wasn't). I abandoned the idea and left it in the 'too hard basket'. It was simply too time consuming. Yes, it is nice to have, but "nice" doesn't justify the effort. The major city suburbs already have a postcode attached, which is why they are still there. The street titles (St, Av, Street, Avenue etc) are now fully spelled out. They were shown only as abbreviations in the previous release. This is to assist with voice directed software that would speak out the street name. There are over 80 (eighty!) street titles that have been expanded. I've left several, because I coudn't find out what they mean. [END]
