In March/April 2005, Scott & Jacinta went for a month-long holiday in New Zealand. We spent the whole time touring 'round the south island. Below are some images we took.

Scott built a cairn (stoneboy) while Jacinta went for a stroll on the beach. The cairn is only about 5cm tall ... it gives you a good idea of how small Jacinta really is! :)

*

On a whale-watching tour in Kaikora, Jacinta snapped this happy sperm whale. Whales are HUGE ... much bigger than Jacinta!
Not visible is Scott (offscreen) puking his guts out & wondering a) why he's never been sea-sick before & b) why Jacinta (who is usually sea-sick) isn't.

*

Sea-kayaking on Malborough Sound on an overcast day. A rare occasion: Jacinta wearing a skirt (first time for Scott too!)

*

A view on the Queen Charlotte walk (near Ship Cove).

*

Sunset on the way to somewhere. (Jacinta says: Abel Tasman National Park ... nope, she's changed her mind. Now she says ... wait, she's looking at the map ... on the way to Marahau.)

*

Jacinta spent quite a bit of time chasing after a shag.

*

Anapai Bay on the Abel Tasman walk.

Abel Tasman walk.

*

We came across a family of Californian Quails. Dad & half-a-dozen kids were mucking around on the ground doing birdy things whilst Mum (pictured) was keeping lookout on a shrub.

*

Sunset somewhere else (on the way to Punakaiki, just south of Cape Foulwind).

*

Jacinta atop pancakes. (Maple syrup & ice-cream not pictured.)

*

Socks & sandals? Trendy!

*

More pancakes.

*

Our first sighting of a glacial river. Somewhere in this river are 2 digital camera batteries - D'OH! Scott was a little flustered when he started sinking in glacial muds!

*

The terminal face of the Franz-Joseph glacier.

*

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire
But if it had to perish twice
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

One of Scott's favourite poems. (written by Robert Frost.) Scott tried very hard to create an avalanche with his ice-pick (pictured soon) but no such luck.

*

Scott smiles at the thought of creating an avalanche.
Jacinta smiles at the thought that Scott won't be able to create an avalanche.

*

One of Scott's many successful attempts at unintentionally wetting his feet! One would have thought the 7°C glacial waters would have been a sufficient deterrent...

*

Views from our 3-day hike on the Routeburn track (the highlight of the holidays for Jacinta).

*

The Routeburn: alpine meadows between Routeburn Falls Hut and Harris Saddle (end of day 1).

*

The Routeburn: Lake Mackenzie at the beginning of an overcast Day 3 (nowhere near as wet as day 2!)

*

The Routeburn: some of the magnificent alpine flora!

*

More images of the beautiful Routeburn: waterfalls and beech rainforest...

*

*

... and Scott relaxes with a hot drink.

*

Freezing cold, early morning spectacular panoramas from the Key Summit (final leg of the Routeburn track).

*

*

Milford Sound in the evening, catching the last rays of the sun.

*

The Purple Oompa Loompas! sea-kayaking on Milford Sound.

*

A view of day 2 of the Routeburn track. If only it looked that good (clear, sunny!) when we were walking it! (This picture was taken a few days later from a roadside lookout.)

*

Lots of toadstools (in the pesky conifer forests invading NZ). Scott looked for blue Smurfs, but the only small creature he found was Jacinta. :)

*

Mid-afternoon panorama of Queenstown.

*

Mount Cook: one of the few water hazards that Scott managed to abstain from unintentionally getting wet in. Note the icebergs (covered in morraine) floating in the lake.

*

Some guys give their girlfriends chocolates or roses to make them happy. Scott thought Jacinta would appreciate a chunk of the Hooker glacier.
