Shiatsu is a is a form of bodywork that has its origins in Traditional Chinese Medicine and the historical massage techniques of Japan.
Modern Shiatsu is based on these oriental traditions (which go back several thousand years) drawn together with ideas and knowledge from modern therapeutic disciplines.
Shiatsu strengthens a person's innate healingpower by freeing and balancing the energy flow ('Ki') along the meridian channels. It allows the body's natural forces to restore correct functions. This is a deep and relaxing technique which is sensitively applied. It can be targeted at general areas or specific points.
It is performed on a traditional Futon mat, with the practitioner sensitively applying firm, steady, pressure, using his hands, elbows and knees along the network of meridians and acupressure points, through which vital energy flows.
This stimulates or sedates points on the skin, connected to functions of the body, allowing the body's natural forces to correct diseases, even before they become pathological. It therefore not only treats, but also prevents illness.
The practitioner also uses specific techniques and sequences to treat musculo-skeletal problems and discomforts and release pain. Working on certain diagnostic areas reveals the current state of the referred system, and also treats it.
