If you are reading this letter you know only too well that arthritis is a painful and crippling disease that affects people of all ages.  Doctors prescribed anti inflammatory drugs and painkillers and told you the condition would get worse as you get older.  Then they discovered the anti inflammatory drugs had seriously damaging side effects.  Suddenly the medicine that was supposed to relieve your pain was both unsafe and unavailable.  A depressing scenario.

So what can you do to relieve the pain and misery of arthritis?

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is a disease affecting the joints and sometimes other tissues,.  The symptoms of arthritis include swelling in one or more joints, stiffness recurring pain, tenderness and the inability to move a joint normally. 

Who gets arthritis?

Arthritis affects people of all ages.  In fact the most common and often serious forms are found in young adults. One in five Australians will suffer some form of rheumatic disease at some time in their life. 

There is a popular misconception that arthritis is an old person’s disease.  It was certainly not a condition I expected to get as a young mother with a two- year- old and a six- year- old.

Briefly this is my story: 

 

 

I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the spine when I was in my early 30s

 

I couldn’t feel the shower water on my back and I was in constant pain. It took a real effort to do simple jobs like cleaning my teeth and turning taps on and off. Walking for any length of time became more and more tiring.  I could no longer pick up my two year old daughter.  I was put on anti inflammatory drugs and painkillers and told the condition would get worse as I got older

 

Then one day I discovered a revolutionary doctor’s diet that promised relief from arthritic pain within weeks.  It was based on a simple Fisherman’s diet of fish, rice and vegetables with chicken added about six months to one year later. Unsatisfied, desperate for relief and sceptical, I bought a copy of the book convinced I would find I had wasted my hard earned money. I decided to give the suggested diet one month of my life after which I would throw the book away. 

  • Within one week to my surprise the pain was less intense

  • Within two weeks     the pain was significantly reduced, moving was easier and my joints less swollen and …

  • After only one month I decided this was my diet for life.

 

My arthritis was gone. My dermatitis and diverticulitis had also vanished, and because the pain had reduced so much I started forgetting to take my medication. With my Doctor’s assistance I then weaned myself off my medication.  That was fourteen years ago!

 

I then got so excited I started creating my own recipes and then wrote Pain Free Living, a cookbook for arthritis sufferers .

So What is the Secret to Pain -Free Living? 

It is a question of choice.  You can continue to eat foods that give you pain or avoid them and enjoy Pain-Free Living!  Based on a simple Fisherman’s diet, I have created mouth-watering, nutritious recipes that satisfy, and at the same time reduce pain, stiffness and swelling. The foods are great for the whole family. Dishes can be served as everyday meals, for children’s parties or special occasions. Desserts and cakes are allowed too!

What can you eat?  Lots of things! Including:  tuna quiche, salmon lasagna, cream of pumpkin soup, tuna roulade, roast chicken, chicken bolognaise, fish and chips, salads, chicken and vegetable stir-fry, hamburgers, vegetarian dishes, sweet pancakes, creamy rice pudding, carob mousse (looks just like chocolate mousse if you use dark carob), soy icecream, sandwich layer cake, carrot and walnut muffins, coconut slice, …and lots more… 

What about foods from the Nightshade family?  Some people swear that foods in this group cause problems.  The list of foods you can eat includes red and green capsicums, aubergines (eggplant), potatoes …. On the Pain-Free Living diet you can eat all vegetables.  Obviously, if you know a vegetable upset you, stay away from it. But you can eat ALL vegetables.

You can still eat tasty, colourful foods.

Having discovered that you eat with your eyes as well as your taste buds’, I made sure I put the colour and taste back into the foods you can enjoy.  You can add lots of delicious fresh and dried herbs plus I have included many natural, healthy eating tips.   Here are three. 

  1.  Tomatoes have long been recognised as creating rheumatism and were on the “No” list of foods.  Carrot and red capsicum quickly replaced tomatoes

  2. It’s amazing how a little bit of cheery grated carrot or a couple of slices of red capsicum can ‘lift’ a dish and give you the colour satisfaction you need.  

  3. Lemon on the side makes a dish look incredibly inviting.

My family were the guineapigs in my culinary efforts as I experimented with different recipes. They encouraged me and bravely agreed to taste all my dishes. However there was one condition: each recipe had to be approved by them before it was allowed to be included in the Pain-Free Living cookbook.

…And let me tell you, there were some disasters!  But I kept experimenting and my family kept tasting until I had created…

“Aged 29 I limped around the house in pain.  Last February I cycled up Mount Hotham, Falls Creek and Buffalo.”

Within 3 days I was not out of pain but I wasn't reaching for the drugs every 4 hours, it was a bearable pain.  Within 2 weeks I felt better than I had for many years.  It took 2 months to be completely PAIN FREE and off all medication.

 

I went back to the specialist who told me he had seen your book before and threw it on the ground!  He wanted me to make an appointment in 6 months as ‘I would be back there and needing those drugs’...that was 6 years ago.

…Did you notice this is NOT a ‘take-this-pill-and-you’ll-be-cured’ story. This is a long term result that has given Bronwyn back her health after she had tried all the other methods which failed.  She chose to make small changes to her eating habits and the huge benefits are that she now lives a normal life again doing what she loves and encouraging others.

 

So why does the Pain-Free Living diet work?

There is mounting evidence from researchers and arthritis sufferers worldwide which helps explain why dietary change can dramatically reduce the incidence and severity of arthritis symptoms.

  • Scientists now know that populations such as those in Asia who derive much of their protein from a diet rich in soy, fish and seafood have significantly lower rates of inflammatory disease than a population s who get most of their protein from animal sources (dairy and red meat).  

  • These same populations also have much lower incidences of osteoporosis, heart diseases, menopausal symptoms, high cholesterol and a variety of cancers including breast, prostate, skin, lung and colon. 

  • Researchers have found one of the reasons for this phenomenon is that soy beans are rich in a type of phytoestrogen (‘phyto’ mean plant, ‘oestrogen’ is a female hormone) called isoflavones. Laboratory studies show that one particular isoflavone known as genistein can inhibit growth factors considered important in the development of rheumatoid arthritis (Migita et al 1995). Experiments with human epithelial cells have also shown that genistein is a potent inhibitor of pro-inflammatory genes (Salzman et al 1997). Initial increases in bone density have been observed hence the reduction in arthritic symptoms and osteoporosis. 

  • In addition to the phytoestrogens, studies found that both soy beans and cold water fish are two of the best sources of the essential Omega 3 fat called alpha linolenic acid. Omega 3 fats have a protective effect on the heart and blood vessels, reducing blood pressure, triglycerides and have been linked with a reduction in immune related conditions such as arthritis. 

  • A Seattle study showed that people who ate two or more servings of fish per week were 43% less likely to develop arthritis. The overall hypothesis was that omega 3 fatty acids may even help prevent rheumatoid arthritis altogether . (Jean A. Shapiro et al). 

  •  Scientific studies and a wealth of anecdotal evidence strongly suggests that dietary change and other improved lifestyle measure can significantly lower both the severity and incidence of arthritis. 

 

More and more, people in Western countries are looking toward the East for possible alternatives to treating and alleviating chronic pain and disease.  It seems the wisdom of the centuries combined with modern research may hold the key to understanding and treating many common ailments, hence reducing the need for drug therapies.

 

Why I was sceptical … and why you should be too!

If this diet really can cure arthritis why wasn’t everyone using it?  What harm could it do me? What proof is there that it really works?

Everyone wants ‘the quick fix’.  If you can swallow a pill why change?… just forget what all the drugs are doing to your insides…Well, let me tell you I started to worry about what all the chemicals were doing to me especially as they weren’t curing my arthritis or taking away the pain. 

Think of all the thousands of dollars you won’t have to spend over the next five, ten, twenty or more years if you no longer need medication.  Why would a pharmaceutical company tell you:  “Don’t eat my pills?”

It’s all about how much pain you’re in and how desperation you are. Pain and desperation make us willing to try something different. (Anthony Robbins in his book ‘Awaken the Giant within” discusses the pain threshold:  ‘It is only when the pain we’re in becomes more unbearable than the pain of change, that we are willing to change’).  So how bad is your pain, really? Is it bad enough to make you want to change some of what you eat?

But hey! there’s nothing scary about making small changes to the foods you are already eating. At any point you can reverse the diet and go back to eating the foods that you were eating before, (and giving you the pain). So there is no risk.  And what if it actually helped…?

Many questions ran through my head as I thought about changing my diet to Pain-Free Living.  The main ones were:

  • Would I remain healthy if I stopped eating some foods?

  • Where would I get my daily intake of Iron if I cut out red meat?

  • What about calcium and vitamin C?

After thoroughly researching the answers I made sure to include them in my cookbook.
