Neil Diamond belied his reputation for reticence in the face of the media when he made himself freely available for interviews in Perth
He seemed to have all the time in the world for a knot of reporters and photographers who waited for him to emerge from his hotel
There was no trace of impatience in his soft resonant voice - not even when a television cameraman confessed that he had no lights for filming inside where Diamond sat in an armchair
"He said:- " This is just the most beautiful place on earth, I can't find a word for it, we are going out for a boat ride to relax and see the city from the river" - he would be involved with the preparations for the biggest concert in Perth. "I will check everything out and get the feeling of the place" he said "I prefer to play out of doors - it doesn't matter where you play as long as the audience can see well and hear well'
He had an obligation to his fans and the public to make sure the show went well
