Starlo and Bushy's Squidgy Secrets
Part 1: The Basics
Anyone who doesn't know who Starlo and Bushy are has probably spent a very sheltered existence for the last couple of decades. Both are regularly published in various fishing magazines, are speakers at boating/fishing show seminars, and both have appeared on Rex Hunt's fishing shows on television.
Eventually, Starlo and Bushy developed a range of soft-plastic lures marketed under the name "Squidgy".
The video, which runs for just under an hour, starts with a session chasing flathead at Mallacoota in Victoria. Flathead are one of the easier fish to catch on soft-plastics, making them the ideal target for anglers new to lure fishing.
The next couple of sessions are spent chasing bream on either side of the country before moving upstream in search of estuary perch. Finally they finish up in Shark Bay, WA, catching spangled emperor and pink snapper, showing that these lures are not only for use in estuaries. Freshwater, however, misses out in this video.
The video covers the different styles of Squidgys, matching tails to jig heads, and how to rig the tail on the jig head. Unfortunately, for beginners there is minimal discussion of leaders and no instruction on how to attach the jig to you line or leader.
Perhaps the most common question asked by soft-plastic neophytes is how to retrieve them effectively. A couple of basic retrieves are explained and demonstrated then put into practice. Also of interest is the type of structure the lures a worked around.
If you've just bought your first packet of soft-plastics (be they Squidgys or one of the many other brands you'll find in your favourite tackle store) and are wondering how to use them, then this video should help you get started.
If you're already a confirmed soft-plastic addict and you're wanting to learn some different presentation techniques then it may be interesting to see if any more videos are released in the series. Since this is only "Part 1 - The Basics" we can only hope so.
Score: For novices 9/10, for more experienced fishos 7/10
