Kayak Fishing

Cabbage Tree Point

Cabbage Tree Point is a small village at the northern end of the Gold Coast about 45 minutes south of Brisbane. It is an ideal launch site to access the islands and channels of the Jumpinpin area.

Getting there

Take the Pacific Motorway out of Brisbane, heading for the Gold Coast. Take Exit 38 onto Jacobs Well Road. About 14 kilometres along Jacobs Well Road turn onto Cabbage Tree Point Road (this is clearly sign-posted) and follow it for about 3 kilometres to the Cabbage Tree Point boat ramp.

Launching

There is a concrete boat ramp useable in all tides but the area is fairly exposed to wind. The foreshore in front of Charlie Hammel Park is nice firm sand with no rocks — ideal for kayak launching — although you will need to lift your kayak down a retaining wall about 90cm high.

Facilities

Charlie Hammel Park is beside the boat ramp and includes car and boat trailer parking, sheltered picnic tables, barbeques, toilets. Cabbage Tree Point Boat Hire is near the park and there is a general store a couple of hundred metres back from the ramp (you will have passed this on the way in).

Comments

If you're planning on an over-nighter on one of the islands you can pay a fee to launch at either Rudy Maas Jetty in Steiglitz Road or Horizon Shores Marina and have the peace of mind that your car will be secure.
