Kayak Fishing

Mooloolaba Beach

by Ross C.

Update

Since Ross first wrote this, we have fished off Mooloolaba several times.

We now tend to park a little further along Parkyn Parade (just before it loops back around) where there is a sandy track leading onto the beach and no stairs to negotiate.

Mooloolaba Beach curves for over a kilometre along Mooloolaba Spit to form a small bay facing North to Northwest, tucked in beside the Mooloolah River bar, and well protected from Southeast weather by Point Cartwright.

Getting there

From Brisbane take the Sunshine Motorway and exit to Mooloolaba then head along Brisbane Road and turn right into River Esplanade. Follow River Esplanade past "The Wharf" and turn right into Parkyn Parade. About 1.1 kilometres along Parkyn Parade is a Rotary Park that has a car parking area and steps down to the beach. This is as close as you can get for a beach launch before the mouth of the Mooloolah River and is the most protected part of the beach (from Easterly, Southeasterly or Southerly winds).

Launching

Compared to most of the Sunshine Coast, there is usually less swell at this location and quite often there is only a small shore-break to contend with.

Access is via wooden steps so care is needed in carrying a Kayak down to the beach.

Facilities

Shelter sheds, barbeque facilities, and toilets are available in the nearby parks and a Café is directly opposite the car park.
