Southport - Gold Coast Seaway and Wavebreak Island
by Ross C.
The area from the Northern and Eastern sides of Wavebreak Island across to the Gold Coast Seaway offers the opportunity to angle for a variety of fish including Tailor, Trevally, Flathead, Bream, and Whiting.
The closest Kayak Launching location is the sandy beach that starts at the Southern end of the rock wall built to construct the Seaway. At this end of the wall you can launch into the calm water of the Broadwater and paddle around to the Seaway. For safety it is best to do this on an incoming tide and at a time when there is low boating traffic as some of the charter boats and larger pleasure cruisers leave behind a huge wake that could easily capsize an unwary Kayaker.
Getting there
Proceed to "The Spit" at the Northern end of Seaworld Drive and just past the Café turn left and follow the rock wall along as it turns in a semi-circle and heads South. Where the rockwall ends the road veers left and car parking can be found right on the bend or on the grassy area beside it. UBD reference is approximately, Map 19, K20.

Launching
From the car park you have to carry your Kayak about ten metres down a small sandy bank to the beach. There are a few rocks in the sand close to the wall but further down the beach is clear.

Facilities
There are no facilities at the car parking area however a Café with facilities is a short drive back to The Spit right opposite Doug Jennings Park.
