Hinze Dam (Advancetown Lake)

Date:12th December 2004
Time:04:30pm
Tide:n/a
Launch site:Western arm, southern ramp (see below)
Water temperature:n/a
Lures/baits used:Spinnerbaits
Report:Headed down to Hinze this afternoon. I found the road to the western arm southern ramp and launched about 4:30pm. There were two guys putting a boat in also, one of them said he was there this morning and scored big time on 'toga and bass. He said the 'toga were patrolling the fringes of the debris floating in the water.
Anyhow, paddled around covering the bank opposite the ramp (which is fully under water now) and turned the sharp right hander into a nice looking bay with loads of submerged vegetation. I was casting a white 1/4oz spinner and scored a 36cm bass which put up a great fight, wrapping me around a few submerged snags before getting him boat side. I continued to cast around that area as a huge storm approached. Tried the creek which runs off the left bank just north of the ramp for no result. The barometer dropped suddenly as the storm appraoched and things quietened down. Managed a second bass about 28cm from the west bank heading back toward the ramp. Pulled out as the rain began to fall.
Location:There's a new ramp (currently under water) at the southern end of the western arm of the Hinze Dam. The dirt road (watch out for the speed bumps) is approximately 11km from Advancetown Road (the normal turn off to Hinze Dam). No facilities, but direct access to Bass and Saratoga.

Time:04:55am - 10:15am
Tide:n/a
Launch site:Western boat ramp
Water temperature:28°C
Lures/baits used:Poppers, diving plugs, jig-spinners, soft-plastics, spinnerbaits.
Report:An early start saw us on the water at first light. The plan was to paddle 4km down the western arm to Ian's Island where fish had been reported. Gavin tied on a popper while I started with a shallow diving plug. We concentrated our efforts along the edges - recently flooded as a result of welcome rains.
It wasn't long before Gavin's popper was smashed but the hookup failed. As we reached the southern shore of Ian's Island, Gavin came up solid with the first fish of the day - a bass of around 27cm. Time for me to change to a surface lure.
My lure was smashed but the hooks didn't find their mark, but I didn't have to wait too much longer before I scored my first bass - a twin to Gavin's earlier fish.
By 7am the surface action had disappeared and it was time to change tactics. Gavin switched to a jig-spinner while I used a soft-plastic behind a fizzer blade. Eventually Gavin scored the only other fish for the day - a 36cm fork-length bass - after spotting some arches on his sounder.
We tried spinnerbaits and deep-diving plugs but could neither find nor tempt any other fish.
