DEW / ADLAM FAMILY HISTORY
|
 |
Jessie DEW (1810-1875>
Married: 16 April 1833,
St. Mary's, Dilton Marsh, Wiltshire
Witnesses: William Toop & Charlotte ADLAM
Ann ADLAM (1810-1888)
|
Jessie DEW and his wife Ann ADLAM came originally from Westbury, Wiltshire, England which is where they were married and had all of their children. In 1856, along with another Dew family, that of George & Jane DEW , they set sail on the vessel MARION for the distant free colony of South Australia, arriving in Port Adelaide 19 January 1957. Once in South Australia, they eventually travelled the great distance south, to the border of South Australia and Victoria, to settle in the township of Mount Gambier. It was here that their surviving children were raised, married and had families of their own.
We do not know what relationship Jesse DEW had to George DEW, (brother, cousin, uncle etc) or if Jesse and Ann DEW were also in the Chain Of Ponds area of South Australia during the late 1850s at the same time as George DEW & James DEW. As Jessie & Ann had no further children after arriving in South Australia tracing their movements in the early years is difficult.
We know from the MARION's passenger list that one of George DEW's children, Job DEW, appears as a member of Jesse DEW's family. Why this should be is not clear, but it may have been for economic reasons as the Emigrant Regulations of the time stipulated that adult emigrants, children up to one year and those over 15 years were given free passage. While a charge of three shillings was to be paid by the parents, friends or parish, for each child between the ages of 1 year and 15 years. It could be that Job DEW was apprenticed to Jesse DEW and therefore, as was the custom of the times, was classed as a member of his household.
What is more certain is that these DEW families seperated soon after arrival in South Australia. While Jesse and Ann DEW settled in distant Mount Gambier , George and Jane DEW moved to the Borossa Valley area, where George left his weaver trade behind him to become a farmer in Cockatoo Valley near Gawler. There is some evidence, however, that the two families remained in contact, at least as far as Job DEW is concerned.
