Ellen KEIGHT and William MASKELL were both born in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, UK. They married under a cloud, being from different classes. William Maskell was not considered good enough to marry a Keight. Ellen married William despite her family's objections but it appears to have caused a rift within the family which never healed.

Shortly after the death of her sister, Alice KEIGHT (1874-1895), Ellen gave birth to her third child in Bromsgrove, a little girl she named Alice Louise (1895-1977). The family then moved to live in Cotteridge, Kings Norton, just outside Birmingham where William worked as a house painter. Several of Williams MASKELL's brothers and married sisters as well as his widowed father, John MASKELLl, also moved from Bromsgrove to Cotteridge, Kings Norton in the 1890s.
