JOSEPH GEORGE WALKINGTONFrom Newton Walkington's research
Born about 1816. Married Eleanor Bird, daughter of William Bird, Tailor, and Eleanor Hutchison on 23/7/1838 at the Parish Church of March. William Bird and Eleanor Hutchison married in March (the town) in 1809. In September 1850 Eleanor (wife of Joseph George) School Mistress, aged 30, and her children, William George 10, Emma 7, Ellen 6 and Sarah 2, arrived per ship Lysander at Port Adelaide to join Joseph George who it is alleged was at Burra Burra Copper Mines and who as one who had purchased land in South Australia, paid £21 for his family to migrate. As yet no record as to how and when Joseph George arrived in South Australia has been found, but by going by the dates of birth of his children it must have been about 1848-1850. What happened to the family between 1850 and 1858 is not known but a son Charles Edwin was born at Rocky Gully near Clare on 20/5/1854. Four other children were born in this period, i.e. between 1850 and 1858.
On 23/6/1858 Joseph became the licensee of the North Star Inn at Melrose until 2/5/1860. It then appears that he was a tailor at Melrose intil he died at the Home for the Incurables (now the Julia Farr Centre) on the 10/6/1892 at the age of 75. His address at that time was given as Hawker. His wife Eeanor died at Melrose on 22/10/1886 aged 71. She was buried at Melrose. J.G.Walkington is shown in the South Australia Directory as a Tailor at Melrose for the years 1873-1876. Then 1877-1878 as a farmer at Laura, 1879-1887 tailor at Melrose. He died at the Home for Incurables Fullarton, SA on 10 June 1892.
Joseph and Eleanor had eleven children, six were born in England. Two of these - George Frederick and Jane died before the family migrated to South Australia.. Only two sons William George and Joeph George reached manhood, married and had a family. Three daughters, Ellen, Sarah and Fanny reached adulthood and married.
Elenor Walkington, a school mistress aged 34, arrived in SA on 23 September 1850 on the "Lysander" with her children

GEORGE FREDERICK WALKINGTON was born 13/5/1839 in England, possibly in March in Cambridgeshire. he was not with the family when they migrated to South Australia in 1850. Apparently died before then.
EMMA WALKINGTON was born in England 28/11/1842 probably in March. Migrated to South Australia, age 7, with her mother and one brother and two sisters. She died at her residence at Mount Remarkable aged 17 on 22/12/1858 after a long illness. Her sisyer Annie died in the same year. (See S.A. Register page 2, column C of 31/12/1858.)
ELLEN WALKINGTON Born in England, probably at March on 14/3/1844. Ellen died in 1917 probably at Port Pirie. She married Henry Jones (by Archdeacon Twopenny ) on 1/11/1865. Lived at Port Pirie. There were four children - Herbert, of Balaklava, William of Westonia, W.A., Mrs Yeatman of Port Pirie West, and Mrs Williams of Leonora, W.A. Golden Wedding 6.11.1915.Extract from Adelaide Observer 14/8/1920 - p.31 Column C -
Henry Jones of Port Pirie died 3/8/1920 aged 83. Lived in Western Australia for 15 years - his wife died 3 years ago. A daughter of G.J.Walkington left 2 sons and 2 daughters.
Henry Jones, resident of Port Pirie for 63 years died in the local hospital on 3rd August, 1920 aged 83. On his arrival in South Australia Mr Jones went to Port Augusta where he was employed at station work by Messrs. Swinden, Maslin (afterwards of Bundaleer) and Agers. Two years later he joined Mr. Slee in a Boot and Shoe business at Melrose where he was married to the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.G. Walkington. After some years he again took up pastoral pursuits and subsequently relinquished them to go into business on his own account. The deceased was one of the foundation members of the Mt.
