too much of a similarity

Is it just me, or does Delta Goodrem and the lead singer from Evanescence sound exactly the same?

i don't know if this should make me fell better or worse for singing along to that song by Evanescence "My Immortal" every time i hear it in the car.

according to my brother Evanescence is also a Christian band. This is making me feel less better about it. But i do like their music....

Bike riding facts - True or false

according to the Age newspaper on Saturday

Cyclists shave their legs to go faster - False
shaving is to minimize grazing injuries when they fall and to avoid accidental plucking

Cyclists do not wear underpants - True
Apparently, but i am not so sure about this, but apparently on long rides underwear can make things uncomfortable...

Cycling affects your sex life - False
the stats say that 20-30% of bike riders suffer sexual disfuntion, the same percentage at the general public. i think bike riding must be good for sex, think of that extra stamina and tight buns... :)

a golden book with your bill anyone?

on Friday night i went out to dinner with Kate and Ben from uni to celebrate Ben's birthday (which actually was quite a few weeks ago but we had never gotten the chance to go out for it officially)

because it was only the 3 of us, we decided to go to Cookie, a cool bar and restaurant on Swanston St. I have been there a few times before and i love the atmosphere, though i still don't understand why they have doilies on the table.

anyway, after having a nice meal of very spicy Thai papaya salad "som tam" we asked for the bill. And instead of the bill coming out on a plate or in one of those bill wallet things like it had in the past when i had dined there, it came out inside a copy of the golden book classic Disney "Fantasia". Why? i don't know, but it was kinda cute. So of course i had to read the whole thing out to the table while we got our money together.

I wonder why they even thought of doing something like that....

curry day

what is curry day you ask?
well you know how on Thursday there was the "biggest morning tea" charity thingo for the cancer council?
well my work decided that morning tea was not going to be enough so they changed the theme a big and made it a charity curry day. Go figure...but who is complaining

so lucky i didn't take my lunch with me on Friday because they had ordered so much curry it was crazy. And really tasty too. Apparently they had like 5lts of rice left over. i didn't know you could measure rice in liters, but apparently you can if you put in an ice cream container. They were trying to get people to take home the left over rice but i was going out for dinner so i didn't think it would be appropriate to walk into a restaurant with a huge amount of my own rice...

why does this song get to me?

Chocolate by Kylie Minogue
for some reason this song annoys me. i dont even like the song, but everytime i hear it i cant stop humming it for a long time!
maybe because i couldnt figure out the lyrics.

so i looked them up and they are as strange as i assumed they would be
but then again, some say that chocolate is better than sex........

Fragile seams
I opened up too quick and all my dreams
Were walking out I'd slowly
Lost my fire
With every single man a river cried
I had no sensation
Completely numb, left with no satisfaction
I thought no-one could ever get me high again
I swear, I was not looking
Oh, waited so long
I thought the real thing was a fake
I thought it was a tool to break me down
You proved me wrong again
If love were liquid it would drown me
In a placeless place would find me
In a heart shape come around me and then
Melt me slowly down
If love were human it would know me
In a lost space come and show me
Hold me and control me and then
Melt me slowly down
Like chocolate
Tastes so good
My heart's been mended who'd have thought it would
An empty bet and still I won the cash
A man who I love and who
Loves me back
Oh, waited so long
For love to heal me so I'd feel it
Thought it wasn't breathing then you came
You proved me wrong again
Like chocolate come here
Zoom in, catch the smile
There's no doubt it's from you
And I'm addicted to it now
Just one look boy to melt me down
Just one heart here to save me now
Your candy kisses are sweet I know
Hold me tight baby don't let go
Just one look boy to melt me down
Just one heart here to save me now
Your candy kisses are sweet I know
Hold me tight baby don't let go.

looks like my site is turning into a place to get recipies from. spinach dip and lemon slice were the only things from australia i could cook in japan. strange, i have never actually put the recipes on here, only talked about them

So for all you people who want to know how to smake spinach dip, here it is! look no further

What you need:
1 cob loaf
1 cup mayonaise
1 cup sour cream
1 packet spring vegetable soup mix
1 spring onion
1 packet frozen spinach or 1 bunch fresh

What you do:
Cut the top off the cob loaf and pull out all the bread inside leaving a shell abouut 2cm thick. Cut the ripped out bread into bite sized pieces.
Defrost the frozen spinach or blanch the fresh stuff. Cut up into smaller bits, dice up the spring onion, then mix it all together.
Dont put it inside the bread until just before you need it or everything gets a bit soggy.
Then to eat, use the pieces you riped out of the inside of the loaf to dip into the mixture, and when they run out start ripping off the sides of the loaf until there is none left.

the trouble with sms

today i am going on a bit of a blog writing spree. Probably because it has been a few days since i wrote last and there is much to catch up on.

especially my latest gripe. The sms dating game

you might remember me talking of this a while back when i was dumped by sms.
well it has happened again. What is becoming of this world!!!!

looking back at it, the last time it wasn't really that bad. We had only met once and there were some difficult circumstances with a recent (found out later to be the day before) breakup and a sick mum. So now i think i can forgive and forget that incident.

but this time, we had been seeing each other for a month! There is a level a relationship reaches when it is no longer acceptable to communicate such important things via sms. For a month long relationship you expect at least a phone call, or at the most a coffee at a cafe on neutral ground.

how do you react to something like this? Especially when the sms cites things such as "lets be friends". So if you really wanted to be my friend you would not try to piss me off with an sms! i think i treat my enemies better than that

so my reaction was of course one of anger, including quite a few attempts to call and do some yelling (note to self, must go to more taiko classes so i can hit things really loud) but of course my phone calls were not answered. So i am left with no choice but to retaliate using the dreaded sms. It feels like i have lowered myself to a level i don't want to be at. But i think my sms shoed how pissed off i was

i don't think guys will ever learn. Even if we are cold hard bitches (which i have been called before but by a different person) we still have feelings, and we have a blog to tell the world about it

yummy yum cha

when was the last time you had yum cha?
do you even know what yum cha is?

you can only have it for lunch at a Chinese restaurant.
they come around with a trolley full of various goodies and you choose what ever you want when it goes past you table, and then you pay for the number of plates you ate. Come to think of it, it is a bit like a sushi train, that is probably why i like it so much.

some of the stuff is a little unappertising though. Chicken feet for one.
but we had some really yummy stuff, especially prawn dumpling and sesame toast.

i could have yum cha every day! Shame it is a bit pricey. But we didn't go to shark fin, we went to the less upmarket place on the corner of Russell and little bourke streets.
but its still good.

trams through the park

up until Friday night i had never caught a tram that went through the center of royal park. i have often driven over the crossing on that road that goes through the center, but never really knew where the tram went.

on Friday night i was invited to my work mates "keg party".
what is a keg party you ask? Well its a party where they have many kegs of beer (and for some reason Punch too) and you pay $10 and you get a stamp on your hand which "approves" you to drink as much as you can.

so to get to this party i had to take the above mentioned tram. Number 55 to coburg. i got of at Brunswick (luckily). The tram driver was scary. i didn't know how much speed you could pick up going through that park! And he spend the whole time on his ding ding bell telling cars to get out of his speeding way.

Kate mentioned on her blog a couple of weeks ago how she was at the hockey center and a tram ran into a car on the tracks behind. Well if that tram was going as fast as this one was, more people would have been injured. But then he was dinging his bell....

anyway, the party was kinda cool, but i didn't really know anyone there except for other work mates, and wasn't in the mood for making new friends (that is another story which involves my not favorite form of communication, the sms), but i still managed to have fun and i bagged a ride back into Melbourne from one of the guys from work. i didn't want to brave those trams again!

stayed at megu's that night, didnt go to bed till around 3am cause we were up complaining about our love lives, and then had pancakes for breaky to try and make us feel better. maple syrup on pancakes makes everyone happy

Japanese tutoring

its a long shot, but you never know, someone might find this ad via google.

if there is anyone out there who is studying VCE Japanese, lives in Melbourne and needs a tutor. Send me an email and i will get in touch with you.

i have been studying Japanese for 10 years, lived in Japan for 2 and have experience as a tutor. i specialize in grammar and conversation.
rates are negotiable

on the topic of ads, i also have a Japanese electronic dictionary for sale.
its a canon IDF-3000. One of the best dictionaries for students of Japanese because it has the "jump" function to decipher hard to read kanji.
i am only selling it because i bought a smaller one in Japan last year, but i still find the IDF-3000 easier to use. It has an English manual too.
i would like to sell it for $170, but its negotiable. They sell them for around $350 at Japan Book plaza in Sth Yarra. Drop me a line if you are interested

male vanity

did you know....

it costs $45 for a full leg wax for a female at my local beauty salon
but it costs $55 for a male to get the same thing done!

is this because they are more hairy?

i wonder about the "crack and sack"? i remember hearing about this procedure on triple J one day. One of the presenters had been dared to get it done and was having a lot of trouble finding a place that would do it for him

they don't offer that service at this salon. i am not sure there would be that much demand for it anyway. Men are wimps when it comes to pain.

talk about coincidences

i know i go on and on about life's little coincidence, but sometimes it is scary
like the time i met the girl who lived at my travel agents house (in Croydon) at a nightclub in Japan
and when my brother ran into his old choir in Osaka
and when i was over at nathan's house the other day and we discovered his flatmate went to the same highschool as me

today's coincidence is not about people but time.
i got my finalized flight times for my trip to Germany in July yesterday
today i was chatting to a friend at uni, who will be going to NZ for the snow in July.
we discovered that we will both be arriving back in Melbourne airport at exactly the same time on the same day.

how about that!

baked beans are good for your heart...

have you seen the Heinz beans ads around at the stations recently? Kangaroo island spa Byron bay sound system, etc? There is that one that i still don't get on TV about the Sydney harbor bridge too.

have you ever wondered where is the one about Melbourne?

i finally saw it yesterday. It was on the wall of the walkway in Richmond station.
it comprised of a picture of a hall with a few Heinz beanz cans places on the floor where the roof was leaking. The caption was "Melbourne uni maintenance"

well i think they have a bit more to spend than swinburne. Didn't the 12th floor of the BA building flood only a few weeks ago? Maybe they should change the caption.

what carly saw

today i saw strange things

1. Not so strange if you are in Japan, but i have never seen this in Australia before.
on the train there was a young lady on her mobile phone (using her shoulder to hold it to her ear), holding a mirror in one hand, and curling her eyelashes in the other. That's what i call multi-tasking

2. Also on the train, there was a guy who had his laptop out and was sitting there typing with gloves on

3. When i arrived at uni, it was raining. And there was a middle-aged lady outside in the rain, in a suit, breaking small branches of a tree and took them with her. i was wondering all day what she might be doing with them

melbourne central station wisdom

everyday when i get off the train at melbourne central to go to work i see the following quote

"i am awestruck, you give me reason to live"

what does it mean, where did it come from and why is it written on the 4th floor of melbourne central shopping centre? it has been bugging me for months.

cars still cant kill me

i survived another bike accident today

this time it didn't really involve a car, at least i didn't hit the cat this time.
i braked before it got me, but in the process catapulted myself over the handlebars again!

it was rather spectacular.

i will try and explain the scene
it was a divided road, and there was a car sitting in the middle getting ready to turn across my path into a side road.
from my perspective, the car was not seeing me and was going to continue in front of my path and i would hit it.
i don't think i was going that fast, but it was fast enough for when i put on my brakes the bike stopped very suddenly and the front brakes over compensated for the back ones and the back of the bike swung around to the front. And i ended up on the ground

only a few injuries this time. i was wearing gloves so i saved most of my hands, just a small cut that looks like i attacked myself with a cheese grater, and a big bruise on my right palm/ other than that i have a graze on my shoulder and a bruised leg. i did hit my head on the ground so luckily i was wearing a helmet. But i still have a bit of a head ache now, 7 hours later.

at first i thought i would be okay, and i was, but my bike needed repairs. So i was not too far away from the bike shop and they tightened up all the loose bits. But seeing i had hit my head and everything was a little blurry i called mum and she came and picked me up. i now know that my bike does fit in my car if you take the wheels and seat off.

i had been on my way to the Japanese festival in box hill. So i was a little late. Kate was nice enough to wait for me though.

i was a bit disappointed with the festival. i had hoped to get there by 12.00 to see the taiko performance but we were too late. They did have some good food and we did run into nearly all the Japanese people we know - ayaka, haruka, hayato. Also Ashliegh and Kyle from rotex. Matt saw his Japanese teacher and i saw lectures from uni.

on the way home matt picked up the unicycle he is borrowing for his school production from one of josh's friends house. i wonder if he is going to be able to master it by august.....

after that i came home to rest my sore head and have been watching Disney cartoons till now. Ice age and lilo and stitch are very cute. Not too much to think about with cartoons, and a good way to put of studying

surely a good way to waste away a friday arvo at work.

still got it

well my trip up the mountain the other day was not just a fluke. i was able to do it again yesterday, and this time i scraped almost 30 mins off the time it took last time. But it is not getting any easier. i only stopped twice on the way up and quite a few people overtook me! It does kind of spur you on to try harder though when you have a bit of competition.

but sadly i was still not able to get any better speeds coming down the mountain, the top i got to was only 50km/h. My mum is not happy about me riding down so fast but what is she going to do about it?

breakfast meetings - way too early for me

for some silly reason, it was decided that we should have our "weekly" work meetings at 8am from now on. I say "weekly" because so far we have had 2 since i have been working here, and i started back in february.

anyway, today was our first 8am meeting. i was glad that i wasnt the only one running late. i had planned to stay at work only as long as teh meting went, but i didnt get out of there till 12pm! work has a way of not letting you leave when you want to.

the only beneift is that we get breakfast on lygon street as payment for coming in so early. i chose pancakes, not realizing that they were topped in icecream. a great wya to start the day.

i have had so much cake and icecream over the last few days with mothers day on sunday and going out with the girls on friday night. i better get back on the bike again this week.

but for now it is back to the homework. it is "consultation" week after all!

connex apologies for any inconvenience

i decided to sign up for that connex service for sms that tells me when trains have been cancelled
i got my first sms today, the train i would normally be catching if i wasn't staying in the city for dinner tonight was cancelled. i was quite surprised that they are worded exactly the same way that the announcement at the station would be. Therefore when i read it i hear it in my head and it makes me just as annoyed.

actually i am more surprised that i haven't had more of these sms since i signed up.
maybe connex is finally getting its act together?

it is cool that this service is free, but the fact that they need to have it at all is disappointing.

the ads at the station talk about "where you would rather be".
i don't know if i would rather stay at work later on a Friday night because of a cancelled train though....

where to buy letter paper

in this age of the internet generation, nobody writes real letters anymore. I cant remember the last time i got a proper letter in the mail that wasn't a bill or junk
and it is going beyond just letters, I was told that at the Toshiba office in they don't even have paper at all anymore for any of their business activities, its all done by computer

so with this in the back of my head, my brother and i set out yesterday to buy some letter paper so he could write some thankyou letters to his host families back in Japan. So not just any old writing paper, it had to be "Australian" paper
I didn't have the first idea where to start. So we went to Knox. i was thinking that in such a large shopping complex you should be able to get something

we tried the card shops, we tried the newsagents, we went to Australian geographic, we went to myer.
the only place that there was even girly floral printed paper was myer.

what is becoming of this world?

but then again, when was the last time i sent a letter?

i conquered the mountain!

this is to those people who said it couldnt be done

today i rode my bike to the top of mt dandenong and survived.
its a 40km round trip to my house. i guess the best thing about that is that it is down hill for 20km of that

it was definately a hard slog up to the top. worked up a sweat and got the heart pounding a bit. which was useful seeing was only 15 degrees outside.
the only problem was that on the way down, seeing i didnt have to do any work with my legs to keep moving, only steering and watching out for trucks, it was bloody freezing.

i was being a bit cautious though, seeing it was the first time to ride on that road, i only let myself go down at around 50km/h
next time i will try and break the speed limit

this blog brings them all

today i received an email from a person who liked my site. Contrary to popular belief, I have many admirers it seems

In the email he introduced himself and then listed some information about himself. I think it was like one of those emails that you get from your friends every so often making sure you know all about them. Its the first time i have gotten one from a complete stranger.
The most interesting facts about "Campbell Douglas Thomas Craig" were as follows
1. Hobby: model making and cross stitch
2. Favorite PJ's: I usually sleep naked, but when Im sleeping over at a mates I have cow pyjamas
3. Do you like candles? Yep, especially smelly ones

i didn't think it was appropriate to put the whole contents of the email up (and boy was it classic), but i didn't a bit of searching and found out a bit about the guy who sent the email. Below is a snippet from his website. This is legit because it is already published. It is a description of his Monday mornings. It speaks for itself.

"Mondays are the worst day for me, as I usually get up around 7:30am to the sharp piercing tunes of my clock radio playing Top 40 music on FOXFM at 1000 decibels louder than I should have set as I am a heavy and deep sleeper once I get going. As I grumble away to the bathroom with my skimpy white and blue flowery swirl flannelette pyjamas I usually trip over my mobile phone charger cord while am totally oblivious to the rest of the world.

My shower is really stuffed to say the least. Its one of those with one adjustable tap that all you have to do is adjust the pressure of the water. Now, if I just move it one millimeter too far, I could be in Antarctica (so bloody cold) or in the Sahara Desert (scolding hot). It took me about four days to get the exact turning on of the silly thing. So if you stay at my place, for reference, it takes exactly four full turns and two slight hits back.

Under the shower, once in the right heat level, I scrub away until for five minutes or so and play with the foam I make with my pubic hair sometimes or even put shampoo down there just to see how much foam I can work up. I dry myself off with my stingy lime green and orange towel then hastily make it to the kitchen to cook myself either scrambled eggs or toast by itself."

BB disappointment

not that i actually watch Big Brother, but i was a bit disappointed when the "big secret" turned out to be that the prize money was $1 million as opposed to the $250,000 is was in previous seasons.

Giving the competitors more money is not going to bring more viewers cause they know they will never see any of that money themselves. It would have been better to have a secret that involved the viewers in some way, giving them a reason to watch an otherwise overdone show.

i wont be sucked in to its downward spin this year. Are we not over reality TV yet?

Sunday Roast

I cant remember who i was talking about this to the other day, but i was saying that my family never has traditional food anymore. Its always Asian or Italian food. i guess it is easy to cook, and tasty, but sometimes you just yearn for a nice big juicy traditional roast.

Well anyway when i got home on Sunday, there it was, a huge piping hot roast with all the trimmings: gravy and potatoes and pumpkin and peas. I cant remember the last time we had one.

I thought there must have been some sort of special occasion or something, but i guess it was just the weather. Weather like this weekends called for traditional winter feasts.

it was so yummy i used some of the left overs (not that there was much left after we had finished with it) to make a big sandwich for lunch today. i have decided i have to take my lunch to work more often, lunch on lygon street is just costing me too much.

my weekend

i had a lunch date on Saturday. After all my my dating disaster in the last few weeks, this was a welcome change. i would have to say i had a good time and i have a feeling i wont be being dumped by sms again in the near future. He was a real gentleman

i met Nathan a couple of weeks ago (at my birthday party actually). He is a friend of Bianca and Liesl's, who they had invited along. At the time i was busy chasing another failed romance with "Arun" (yes that was the spelling) so i didn't really take much notice.

The other week at Bianca's birthday i caught up with him again. And i guess the rest of the story leads us to this point in the story.

So we had lunch in Chinatown, went and saw the movie Starksy and Hutch. One of those movies that are good for a rainy Saturday, you don't really have to think so much. I was considering seeing that Jim Carrey one Eternal Sunshine, but its a bit too much thinking. Anyway, Starskey and Hutch is a very daggy movie.

So i had a good date. I think i will be seeing him again. As long as i don't get dumped by sms :)

But the weather on Saturday was horrid. I had been planning on riding into the city. But that idea was quashed when it started to hail. Later when i got home my dad was telling me that he had to get up on the roof to clear the gutters and they were full of ice, many hours after the hail storm.

Saturday night was the last 21st in my group of friends, Kristy's. Its about time. I turned 21 back in March last year!
Just at the Hawthorn near uni. She got the function room booked and there was lots of food and a bar tab.
Melinda and Lochie made a great speech, doing their best to embarras Kristy.
Nathan was going to come by later in the evening but the line that had formed out the front of the pub was not inviting.
I personally detest lining up to get into places, especially pubs (that time it took nearly 2 hours to get into the Irish pub at Knoz was not fun). The bouncers were arseholes too. I went out the door just a little to chat to him and they didn't even give me 30 seconds to talk until they made me go back inside or go to the end of the queue.

anyway, i had a good day and night (besides the bouncer incident), and hope to have many more
