I read the two articles: “Away from Icebergs” and “Into a new world of librarianship.” Both articles pay service to the idea that libraries and librarians must move with the times. Librarians can no longer act like gargoyles guarding secrets, as the secrets are out. Public libraries at least anyway.
Still a lot of the mentality persists. Librarians are not yet ready to step on the forefront of technology and ride these turbulent and rewarding waves. Current Web 2.0 technologies have been “out there” for several years, and only when they have been taken up by thousands of users and patrons, the librarians could no longer resist the crowd. I think the iceberg is still on the horizon for libraries and librarians to beware, as progressive pockets of individuals and behemoths such as Google, may come out in front.
