PRESS RELEASE

In his fourth solo exhibition, Churcher finally revisits the memories of his New Zealand childhood. Through paintings, pastels and prints Churcher expresses his childhood vision and captures the beauty of the New Zealand landscape.

"The landscape inside" is a more apt description, as Churcher explores the way these forms have kept with him and folded into his conscious and unconscious being.

Sleepless with asthma as a young child, Wayne Churcher's long art apprenticeship began earlier than most at the age of three. For many nights over the next nine years, the boy used his sketchbook to escape his illness and develop a life long passion.

This latest exhibition can be attributed back to his memories of gazing through his bedroom window to the vast beauty and open space of the landscape.

Churcher's own feeling of isolation would compel him to transport his mind to the outdoors and the wonder that awaited him on his recovery.

Later in his teens when his health had improved and still drawn to the landscape surrounding him, Churcher was able to travel extensively in back seat of the family wagon and gain a much closer perspective of the naturally rich, earth tones and powerful forms.

Wayne explains, "A recent trip to the South Island stirred these memories and I felt compelled through this exhibition to communicate the influence that the land has had on me and to try to further explore these forms.

He added, "This work depicts shapes as seen through my eyes. They are powerful, silent and alone and continue to resonate within me. They are beyond human affairs and yet become a part of us. They were here before us and shall continue long after."

"Homage is my way of celebrating and appreciating these powerful forms whilst understanding the influence the land has had upon me.

Although the love of art flowed through his veins from an early age, family aspirations saw Wayne's direction diverted in later youth as he took a more studious path and completed a science degree specialising in human genetics at the age of 24

However his affinity with art was not over and any time spent away from the laboratory was spent honing his artistic skills.
