Guinea pigs featured in fiction books

Guinea pigs appear and feature in the last 100 or so years as a character in English language fiction books. Read an early story

Mostly the stories are written for children, except for stories like Pigs is pigs and Sorry Chief a story of invisible guinea pigs and the TV character, Maxwell Smart.

Guinea pigs

Guinea pigs are curious (some may say nosey), sociable, fun-loving animals. They have a good sense of smell, can run fast and jump. They also love to eat and sleep in a safe home.

Guinea pigs are cuddly animals. They make soft noises and are fun to watch especially when they're playing or eating grass stalks that disappear between their front teeth.

Guinea pigs aren't for everyone. They don't clean up after themselves, they do run away when you go to pick them up (unless you have food on offer), they wee on you (unless you can read their signals), and generally they don't come when you call, nor follow you on a leash.

"I had one as a child" adults will often say, as if it's uncool to own one now they've grown older.

Sometimes children see it that way too. In some stories, the guinea pig isn't the pet the child wanted.

In the book, Nell & Fluffy, Nell is given a guinea pig for her sixth birthday. For her seventh birthday she wants a cat or a horse or a dog like the older children.

She abandons her guinea pig, Fluffy, in the hopes that her parents will buy her a dog.

In The saddlebag hero, Lyn wants an Alsation dog for her tenth birthday. Instead, her parents buy her a guinea pig.

I like guinea pigs because they very much do their own thing, but their antics make me laugh. They're small, furry, cuddly and they make soft noises as they chat away and purr in happiness when they hear sounds they like or you pat them in a way they like.

I like the pictures of guinea pigs that show the animation in their faces and illustrate them in their natural movements and poses.

Guinea pigs in art

Looking in the Prado Museum in Spain I noticed guinea pigs in paintings by the famous artist Jan Brueghel. Since then I've seen guinea pigs in pottery and sculpture too.

Take a look a these samples of guinea pigs in artworks from before the 16th century through to Carl Faberge in the twentieth century. Some of them are from the collections of the Museo Prado, the Vatican, and the Royal Collection (UK). Move the cursor across the samples and use the links to see the page with complete images as seen on the website of the collections.

How do you tell stories about guinea pigs?

I think the best authors are the ones who use the natural habits and behaviours of guinea pigs to tell their stories.

Famous for...other animal stories

Some authors famous for other animal stories have also written, not so famous stories, about guinea pigs.

Babe author, Dick King-Smith has written two books featuring guinea pigs - Jenius and I love guinea pigs.

Paddington Bear author Michael Bond has written many tales for the guinea pig Olga da Polga.

Snow Goose author, Paul Gallico wrote four adventures for Jean-Pierre, a guinea pig that talked, joined the circus, went round the world and was "pignapped".

Peter Rabbit author, Beatrix Potter wrote and illustrated The tale of Tuppenny part of the story The Fairy caravan. Potter also wrote a nursery rhyme about "an amiable guinea-pig".

100+ year old story with a guinea pig

The oldest story I've found goes like this:

Mr Hipp or three friends in search of pleasure. by W.H Romaine Walker

Mr Hipp packs his portmanteau.

Off to the Station.

Mr Hipp requires an extra push.

Mr Hipp secures suitable apartments.

Mr Hipp, Tommy Hipp and Mabel Guinea Pig have a bathe in the sea.

Mr Hipp gives Tommy and Mabel a donkey ride. Tommy has a narrow escape.

Mr Hipp gets a throw.

Mr Hipp catches cold after his fall in the sea. Tommy warms the bed while Mabel gets the medicine.

Mabel tell Mr Hipp a story while Tommy gets the dinner.

Mr Hipp goes to the hairdresser before being photographed.

Mr Hipp, Tommy and Mabel are photographed in a group.

Mabel and Tommy make a castle in the sand while Mr Hipp has a quiet read.

Out for a paddle. (A crab catches hold of Mr Hipp's toe much to Tommy's amusement.)

Caught in a shower.

Mr Hipp gives Tommy and Mabel a ride.

A gust of wind takes Mabel off her legs.

Listening to the niggers.

Mr Hipp returns the compliment and gives the niggers a treat.

Mrs Beeton on The Guinea Pig

This neat little animal has stood its ground as a "Home Pet" from as remote a period as the discovery of America by Europeans. Never was an animal so misnamed, as it has not the remotest connexion with the pig family, and instead of being found in Guinea it is a native of South America. Domestication seems to have completely revolutionized the appearance and habits of the Guinea pig. The colours borne by the animal with which we are familiar, are never seen with the wild animal busy with their domestic affairs among the Bromelia Groves of Paraguay. ... Darwin relates that the wild Guinea pig is common in the neighbourhood of the several towns on the banks of the Rio Plata, where it is known as the Aperea. Where the soil is dry it makes a burrow, but otherwise it lies concealed among the herbage. It generally comes out to feed in the evening....(From: page 698, Beeton's Home Pets)

997. The Guinea-pig - This common hutch companion of the rabbit, although originally a native of Brazil, propagates freely in England and other European countries. Were it not that they suffer cruelly from cats, and numerous other enemies, and that it is the habit of the males to devour their own offspring, their numbers would soon become overwhelming. Rats, however, it is said, carefully avoid them ; and for this reason they are frequently bred by rabbit-fanciers, by way of protection for their young stock against those troublesome vermin. The lower tier of a rabbit-hutch is esteemed excellent quarters by the guinea-pig ; here, as he runs loose, he will devour the waste food of his more admired companion. SOme naturalists assert that the guinea-pig will breed at two months old, the litter varying from four to twelve at a time. It is varied in colour,-white, faw, and black, and a mixture of the three colours, forming a tortoiseshell, which is the more generally admired hue. Occasionally, the white ones have red eyes, like those of the ferret and the white rabbit. Their flesh, although eatable, is decidely unfit for food ; they have been tasted, however, we presume by some enthusiast eager to advance the cause of science, or by some eccentric epicure in search of new pleasure for his palate. Unless it has been that they deter rats from intruding within the rabbit-hutch, they are as useless as they are harmless. The usual ornament of an animal's hind quarters is denied them ; and were it not for this fact, and also for their differences in colour, the Shakespearean locution "a rat without a tail," would designate them very properly.

There was a little guinea pig,
Who being little was not big;
He always walked upon his feet,
And never fasted when he ate.

When from a place he ran away,
He never at that place did stay;
And while he ran, as I am told,
He ne'er stood still for young or old.

He often squeak'd, and sometimes violent,
And when he squeak'd he ne'er was silent;
Though ne'er instructed by a cat,
He knew a mouse was not a rat.

One day, as I am certified,
He took a whim and fairly died.
And, as I'm told by men of sense,
He never has been living since.

The Guinea-pig boy

Ah! little master, stay awhile
My guinea-pigs to see;
They're all that I have in the world
To love or care for me.

I've tended them since they were born,
Until they know me well;
And all the tricks that they can do
'Twould take me long to tell.

They'll hunt my pocket or my sleeve
To find a piece of bread;
Jump over sticks, or patient sit,
And wait till they are fed.

I have some young ones in my box,
Marked in a manner rare;
I'll sell them to you cheap enough,
If you would like a pair.

Ah! master, do not turn away,
To me a trifle give;
You do not know how hard it is
For us poor boys to live.

A new song of sixpence

Sing a song of sixpence,
A barrow full of gold;
Four-and-twenty guinea-pigs
Going to be sold.

The poultry man was standing
In his apron white,
Selling butter, fowls, and eggs
From morning until night.

His wife was in the kitchen,
Making apple pies;
And when she saw the guinea-pigs
She opened both her eyes.

The cat was in the pantry,
Hunting after mice;
And when she heard of guinea-pigs,
She said, "Won't they be nice!"

In rabbit-hutch the guinea-pigs
Were shut up for the night;
The poultry man next morning went,
To see if all were right.

But there he found no guinea-pigs,
For they had got away;
And nevermore the twenty-four
Were heard of from that day.

The history of the seven young guinea pigs

The Seven young Guinea Pigs went into a garden full of Gooseberry-bushes and Tiggory-trees, under one of which they fell asleep. When they awoke they saw a large Lettuce which had grown out of the ground while they had been sleeping, and which had an immense number of green leaves. At which they all exclaimed,
"Lettuce! O Lettuce!
"Let us, O Let us,
"O Lettuce leaves,
"O let us leave this tree and eat
"Lettuce, O let us, Lettuce leaves!"

And instantly the Seven young Guinea Pigs rushed with such extreme force against the Lettuce-plant, and hit their heads so vividly against its stalk, that the concussion brought on directly an incipient transitional inflammation of their noses, which grew worse and worse and worse and worse till it incidentally killed them all Seven.
And that was the end of the Seven young Guinea Pigs.

How can a Guinea Pig show he's glad.
If he hasn't got a tail to wag?
All the other animals, you will find,

And finish off a decent job,
Then the price of a guinea pig
Would go up
From a guinea to thirty bob.

The Guileful Guinea-pig

Years and years and years ago, when I was nearly eight
I met a little guinea-pig, outside my garden gate.
He wept so loud I said to him, 'Well, what's the matter now?'
He gave a grievous sniff and placed
His paw across his brow.

I offered him my hanky, and I said, 'You mustn't drown.
'Come! tell me all your troubles and I'll give you half a crown.'
He wiped his pink and streaming eyes. He answered with a wait,
'It never didn't ought to was
'They've bin and took my tail.'

I pitied him with all my heart. I gave him half a crown.
I told him he could purchase one by going up to town.
He thanked me very hearily and took a penny 'bus.
I followed him on foot because
I hate a lot of fuss.

He went into a pastry-cook's, but I remained outside
I knew he couldn't buy one there however hard he tried.
I waited very patiently for half an hour quite.
I waited half an hour more
Before he came in sight.

He looked so large I hardly knew if it was really he
The weeping little guinea-pig, who spoke so pleadingly.
His face was very pink and puffed. I saw with some alarm
A large and bulging paper-bag
Was tucked beneath his arm.

I strode across the street and said, 'Come, tell me where you've been.'
He stared at me as calmly as a cat stares at a queen.
He said, 'I've had an ice or two and three or four Bath buns.'
He added, 'My! but they wuz good
'I chose the juicy ones.'

I muttered, 'This is very wrong, I gave you half a crown.'
He turned his pockets inside out. He hadn't got a brown!
I turned away in deep disgust. He didn't care a bit.
I said, 'I'll make a tale myself.'
I did-and this is it.

The Guinea-pig and the Rabbit

Said the Guinea-pig to the Rabbit,
His friend so true and dear:
"I've something dreadful, Bunny,
For your own private ear.
You'll never, never tell it?"
The Rabbit said: "No fear!"

"It makes me nervous, Bunny;
I cannot sleep at night,
And all day long I tremble
And simply shake with fright.
You'll never repeat it: Promise!"
Said Bunny: "Honour bright!"

The Guinea-pig drew closer
(His voice was none too clear)
To pour his secret trouble
Into his comrade's ear.
"The left one, please," said Bunny;
"The right one does not hear.

"Now, tell me what's the matter,
And why you look so sad."
The Guinea-pig, distracted,
Cried: "Oh, the shock I've had!
"T is what those boys were saying
That nearly drives me mad.

"The big one told the younger -
They sat there on the rail:
'Ted, if you hold that fellow
Up by its little tail,
Its eyes will drop out, certain
The trick won't ever fail!'

"I saw the look Ted gave me;
He means to try,I know,
And then, oh, dearest Bunny,
My precious eyes will go!"
The Rabbit gave a chuckle,
Ha ha, ho ho, ho ho!

"You poor, dear, foolish Piggy,
No need to turn so pale,
Or trouble what the boys said,
While sitting on the rail.
How can they hold you up when
You haven't got a tail?"

The Guinea-pig stood staring,
And not a word he spoke,
Till, with a jump, he shouted:
"Oh, what a splendid joke!"
And laughed until the Rabbit
Was half afraid he'd choke.

And ever since that morning,
Whene'er they fraternize,
Bun tries to tease his neighbor,
And does it in this wise:
"I hope," says he, "dear Piggy,
You've still your precious eyes."

Chapter IV.

The Guinea-pig.

About a week before the day which Anna's mother had fixed upon for going to London, a lad in the neighbourhood came to the house, and asked if the children would like to buy a guinea-pig, which he brought in a basket. Anna had never before seen such a thing ; she was very much delighted with it, and listened with astonishment to all that the boy related of its diverting tricks and gambols. She begged she might be permitted to witness some of its performances ; but the lad excused it, saying, that the poor thing was shy before strangers. Anna's mother said, perhaps it would continue to be shy ; but the lad said, no ; that it would soon become reconciled to a change of situation. Anna came, and touched her mother's arm, and whispered something in her ear.

"I cannot hear what you say, Anna," said her mother.

Then Anna said, "Will you come into the next room, and speak to me, one minute, mother? But Anna's mother did not choose to leave the room while the boy was there, for he was a sly looking boy, and his family was known not to be very honest. Just then, Anna's father came in, and asked what they were about : he took up the guinea-pig, looked at it, and asked the boy some questions about it. In the meantime, Anna again whispered to her mother, "Which do you think is most useful, a doll, or a guinea-pig?"

M. They are such very different things, Anna, that I really do not know how to compare them.

A. You know, mother, a guinea-pig is alive, and we should see it eat, and have to take care of it, and feed it ; and you know that would teach us to be tender and careful : would it not, mother?

M. Perhaps it might ; what then?

A. Why, mother, I was thinking- but you said you would not, and so it is of no use to say any thing about it ; -or else-I was thinking-whether it might not be better to buy the guinea-pig, than the doll.

Before Anna's mother had time to answer her, Anna heard the boy say, "Then you won't buy it, Sir?" Her father answered "No, to be sure I shall not;" and the boy put his pig in the basket, and went away muttering. Anna was going to cry out, and beg that the pig might be bought ; but she recollected the pedlar and the necklace, so she corrected herself, and whispered to her mother, "I will trust that my father as my good in view."

That same evening, Anna saw her cousin Fanny, who told her that her mother had bought her a guinea-pig. Anna asked, of whom it was bought; and found, that it was the very same which the boy had offered them. When Anna's father heard of it he said he was sorry for it, for he thought the boy had deceived Fanny's mother. Anna begged to know what her father meant ; and he told her, that he thought that the guinea-pig was either old, or unhealthy ; and that the boy wanted to get rid of it, because he knew it would not live long. "Then," said Anna, "I know now the reason you would not buy it for us, father : I am glad you did not buy it ; but I am sorry, too, that my aunt should be cheated. Well, what a good thing it is that my half-crown is safe in my mother's care, to buy me a doll. I do think a doll is the best thing after all."

"It is certainly best," said her father, "that children should know their own mind. Though it is of no great consequence which way half-a-crown is spent ; or whether a little girl like best to play with a doll, or a guinea-pig, it is of consequence that she should acquire a habit of duly considering before she decides, and, when she has chose, of being steady to her choice. If these habits are not acquired in childhood, most likely the individual will grow up into life, with fickle, unsettled, extravagant, and dissatisfied habits. Suppose Anna, when your mother goes to market to buy provisions for the family, or clothes for you children, that she should come back, and tell us, she had seen in a shop-window, something so pretty, and so tempting that she had spent all her money upon it, instead of purchasing the provisions or garments that she went out for-do you think that the family would be exposed to very great inconvenience by such conduct? Or suppose, that every time I see a house to be let, or a shop to be disposed of, I should take it in my head that it would suit me better than my own, and so be continually moving and changing : I should soon bring my family to poverty and ruin.

A. Yes, father, but you and mother know better than to do such foolish things.

F. Yes, Anna ; we were taught better, when we were children ; and we are anxious, that our children should learn to act prudently in their little affairs, that they too, may know how to act in larger concerns, as they grow up in life.

The next day Anna went to her aunt's, and asked to see the guinea-pig ; and her aunt said, "poor little piggy! I am afraid it is not well ; we cannot get it to eat." Every thing that the boy had mentioned, as fit for its food, was offered to it ; but the poor thing seemed quite dull, and trembling ; and could not be prevailed on to taken anything. The boy was sent for, to come and see what was the matter with it, but he only laughed at the request ; he had got his money, and knew that he had cheated his customers ; but that he did not mind, for he was a bad boy.

The guinea-pig, pined for several days, and then died. Poor little Fanny grieved very much about it, and Anna could not help shedding a tear, but she was comforted when she saw her mother set off in the coach to London, and thought of the doll that she expected to receive on her return, and the pleasure which she and her cousin Fanny should enjoy in playing with it. During her mother's absence, Anna learned the following lines, and repeated them to her on her return.

The Chip Boy

Jack and his dancing guinea-pig.

Chapter 1

Poor Jack Turned from the Door--What his Life had Been--And How he had Run Away from his Cruel Master--Shelter for the Night at Last.

Daylight was dying away early--so January daylight is wont to die--as Jack trudged along through the mud, the cold, and the damp misty air, carrying his guinea-pig, nestling close under his jacket for warmth. The village of Irwood lay just before him; so he plodded on, footsore, weary, hungry, and heavy-hearted, hoping against hope that some there would have the wish to see a guinea-pig dance when he offered them such a funny sight. Poor Jack, so hungry, so footsore and cold! Poor Guinea, nestling so snugly under his master's ragged jacket! They had met with very little success all through the weary day, and now that night was coming on, were shelterless, and supperless, and tears were stealing into Jack's blue eyes. Nevertheless he plucked up courage, and went bravely to the first dwelling in the village, which chanced to be a farm-house, and, tapping at the door, asked the modest question when some one opened it, "Do you want to see a guinea-pig dance?"

"What?" roared a voice, which sent terror through Jack's heart, and made Guinea cling the closer to his protector, "a guinea-pig dance! I and Rover'll make you dance, you young ragamuffin. Here Rover!"

The owner of the voice was a big stout man, who held a candle in one hand and a thick stick in the other. Out popped the stick, up raved Rover, barking all along the passage, the light flashed for a moment on poor Jack, and then he fled as for his life, Rover at his heels. At last the gate was shut on the savage dog, and Jack, trembling in every limb, was making his way to the door of a neat cottage. The firelight was shining out through the uncurtained window, and Jack saw a table spread for tea, and rosy children clustering around it. He had only caught a glimpse as he passed on to the door, but somehow it brought a lump into his throat. Tap, tap at the door, and out came a pleasant smiling woman.

"Please do you want to see a guinea-pig dance?"

"No, my boy, I've plenty of dancing guinea-pigs in-doors!" She shut him out--that poor little wandering boy with his dancing guinea-pig--as if she had no little clinging children of her own, that might perhaps be outsiders too some day.

On from cottage to cottage went the weary boy, his heart growing heavier, his voice more pleading every time he asked his oft repeated question, "Please do you want to see a guinea-pig dance?" and was answered "No!" kindly or roughly as the case might be. No-body seemed to care for the sight of a dancing guinea-pig ; nobody had cared all through the day, and he had travelled miles. He would have been starved had it not been for a penny given him in the morning by a pretty little lady riding through the wood on a fat little donkey that looked most inquisitively at him, and in-sisted upon braying at poor innocent Guinea, and would not pass it by ; but the penny was spent ; it was dark now, and there was no use in trying anywhere else tonight ; so down he sat on a bank sodden with rain, and burst into a passionate fit of crying. He as but ten, and he was so hungry, so thirsty, so weary, so cold, so lonely, oh, so lonely! with never a friend in the world but his guinea-pig, his dear little guinea-pig, clinging so lovingly to him underneath his jacket. The boy drew him out from his warm hiding place ; his fur was black-and-white, and he had pink eyes. The small thing thought that his master intended him to dance, so up he stood on his hind legs on Jack's knees, and waited for him to whistle a jig.

"No, not to-night, Guinea," said the boy, bending over him, and stroking the small warm thing. "Oh, Guinea, Guinea, Guinea!" and a shower of tears fell on his soft coat. "They won't take any notice of us, and we've no supper, nor bed, nor anything ;" but Guinea only poked his nose into Jack's hand, and then crept back again under the sheltering jacket, to cling and nestle over the poor boy's aching heart.

Oh, how Jack cried that evening, sitting there on the damp bank alone with his guinea-pig, his poverty and desolation! He had tramped from London ; all the way from smoky, toiling London, where he had lived all his life, which was ten years. Nobody knew who his father and mother were, Jack entertaining a great doubt as to whether he had ever possessed either. The wife of a Mr. Jerry Joker, an old organ grinder, had found him in the streets, a little helpless baby, and had taken care of him after a fashion, until she died, which was when Jack had reached the great age of six years ; and very soon he knew he had lost his best friend. Mr. Jerry Joker was a cruel man, who kept several small boys, and sent them daily out into the streets, one with a monkey, another with white mice, and so on, to pick up a living for themselves and something for him. His share he would always have, whether they had had a good day or a bad one, and a large share too, or a certain knotted cord went to work, and sundry cries were heard to ring out from Jerry's quarters. Poor boys! they one and all dreaded the knotted cord, even big Jem, who, as the oldest of the band, was honoured to carry the barrel-organ and grind people out of their wits until they gave him a trifle. No wonder they stole what they could in their wanderings, when Jerry's share was all, and sometimes more than all, of their day's earnings. Jack's work, ever since Mrs. Jerry died, had been to go out with a guinea-pig, to which he whistled a tune, and coaxed the small brute into cutting capers on his hind legs, which Jack called dancing, thus managing to earn a few stray pence. For four years had Jack and Guinea been in partnership ; nobody but Jack knew what Guinea was to him, amid the sin, want, and wretchedness of that London existence which people called life.

But a month ago he had run away and left all this. The thought had come to him as he lay sobbing on his bed after the knotted cord had been to work with him, while listening to the Christmas bells. Not that Jack knew anything about Christmas, but the sweet soft music sinking and rising on the night air stirred a longing in his little soul for something better than his present life, and when all his companions, tossing on their rag beds, were hushed in sleep, poor creatures! he stole out, determined to run away into the happy country, a sort of fairy-lands of which had and his friends have whispered the thought to him, for the beautiful beings do not shrink from dirt and rags when the Great Master bids them go. Be that as it may, he went, and took Guinea with him, for he could not leave the dear little creature behind. Besides, his wits told him he would have to whistle and Guinea to dance for daiy bread as they went along. So they had, and scanty enough their fare had been ; the further they got from London the less people seemed to care for seeing a guinea-pig dance, until to day only one piece of bread and the little lady's penny had they earned.

But Jack was not the boy to cry long ; so up he got, and, by the light of the stars, which were now twinkling above him, made his way along a lane to one solitary little cottage with one small window, where a merry light sparkled and flashed, as much as to say, "Come on, this is the place to make your guinea-pig dance, my lad."

To the door went Jack with a tap, tap, tap, and who should open it but a very funny little old woman, with a candle in one hand and not a stick in the other.

"Please do you want to see a guinea-pig dance?"

"La! no, child, because I don't think you could make one do it if you tried," exclaimed the very funny little old woman.

"I could, ma'am, indeed I could!" pleaded Jack, fearful lest the door should close, shutting him out again with the twinkling stars and no supper.

Who put it into that funny little old woman's head to say, "Come in, child, and let him dance by the fire?" It must have been Him who lives above the twinkling stars, who calls Himself the Father of the fatherless ; who saw his tears dripping down on Guinea that evening ; who heard his sobs in London when the Christmas bells were ringing, and sent that bright angel, if an angel really visited him, to whisper that thought of finding a home in the country.

Jack stepped inside, and the door closed, shutting out the cold pitiless night and the cruel world.

Chapter II.

The Old Woman in the Cottage--She Gives Jack a Bed for the Sake of Another Jack--Guinea Dances after Supper--New Clothes--Betty Frost Offers Jack a New Home--Jack Begins the New Life.

Oh, what warmth, what light, what comfort, lay within those four white-washed walls, with the blazing fire, the neatly-swept hearth, the arm-chair close beside it, a small table close to that, with such a large book lying open upon it, and that funny little old woman the mistress of all! Jack stood at the door bewildered ; he fancied he must have fallen asleep on the wet bank and was only dreaming. He drew out Guinea from under his jacket ; but Guinea was hungry and tired, and tried to creep back again.

"He won't dance to-night, ma'am ; he's hungry and tired ; but I'll sing you a song instead, if you'll let me," said Jack, with trembling earnestness.

"You don't look any more fit to sing than him to dance, I'm thinking," said the funny little old woman, scanning the boy's wan pinched face with the wistful blue eyes.

That lump was coming into his throat again

"Come here and sit down by the fire, and tell me where you've come from, and where you're going?"

Going! that was more than Jack knew ; but he sat down on a stool the old lady placed by the fire, and put Guinea on his knees, to enjoy the warmth too.

"I came from London, but I don't know where I'm going to," said he, wishing he did.

"Where is you father?" asked the old woman.

"Han't got one, ma'am."

"Where is your mother?"

"Han't got one neither."

Your home is in London, I suppose, my lad?"

"No 'tisn't."

"Where then?"

The funny little old woman was sitting in her armchair peeping at him through her spectacles

Nowhere ; I han't got a home."

"Nor yet any friends?"

"No, only Guinea!" He bowed his head on the mute little creature, to hide his tears. But those spectacled eyes were sharp ones, and saw them.

"And where are you going to sleep to-night?"

"I don't know."

"Oh, sakes alive, what a boy! What is your name?"

"Jack."

"What besides?"

"Nothing but Jack," replied the child innocently.

Why, there were tears in the funny little old woman's eyes now!

"Jack; I had a son named Jack once," said she, sadly ; "and for his sake and another's I'll let you sleep in his bed to-night."

It did not seem true. Jack spoke not a word of thanks ; but when she had bustled about and made him a basinful of bread and milk, and brought it to him, he caught her hand in his, bowed his head upon it, and deluged it with tears. The funny little old woman seemed to understand him, for she stroked his dirty matted fair hair, and said, gently, "Poor lad, eat your supper, and you'll be better."

He did eat it, at least he and Guinea, to whom he held spoonful after spoonful as he kept his place on his lap, and when the spoon went too often into his master's mouth to please him he poked his nose into the basin and helped himself. After that nice refreshing supper they both felt better, so Jack whistled, Guinea danced his very best, and the funny little old woman laughed till the tears ran down her cheeks. After that Guinea dozed, Jack felt very drowsy, and nearly fell off his stool, while the funny little old woman peered into her large book, and whispered and read.

"Now, my boy," said she, presently, shutting the book, with her spectacles inside, "come and look at your bed."

"And Guinea may come, mayn't he?" pleaded the boy ; he had not slept away from Guinea for four years.

"Oh yes, he's clean enough, take him along," was the answer ; and very soon Guinea and Jack were snugly tucked up in that other Jack's bed.

Jack did not see the funny little old woman steal into his room an hour after, and look sadly at him with those faded blue eyes of hers ; he did not see her kneel down by his bed-side and pray a long silent prayer ; no, for he was fast asleep. But the next morning he did see, when he awoke, a suit of well-worn clothes on a chair by his side, quite grand attire as it seemed to him, and his own tattered garments nowhere about the room. At first he almost doubted whether he was Jack--the hungry, cold, lonely Jack of yesterday; but there lay Guinea rolled up in the bed, so he concluded that he was Jack, dropped by some means into a new world, and sprang out of bed, and into those princely garments, as if he had a right to them. Then he took up Guinea, and made his way down-stairs to find the funny little old woman, the secret hope going with him that she might have another bowl of bread and milk for him before he started on his rambles. Yes, there was a blazing fire, a singing kettle, the breakfast ready, and a noble basin of bread-and-milk for some one, that was certain, and there sat the funny little old woman, reading her very large book again.

"Ah, Jack, so you've found your way into the clothes!" said she, smiling over her spectacles.

"Yes, ma'am ; I--I--because I couldn't find my own," stammered Jack, standing humbly at the foot of the stairs.

"That's right, and now come and take the liberty to eat this bread-and-milk, and while we're eating we'll talk," was the reply.

So Jack went and sat down on the selfsame stool he had formed acquaintance with the evening before, ate out of the self-same basin, and enjoyed his breakfast just as much as he had his supper, little Guinea taking his share in the same fashion.

"What's your name, ma'am?" asked Jack, who thought he should like to know what to call such a nice old lady.

"Betty Frost," said she, sipping her tea.

"And your Jack's name was Jack Frost?"

"Yes;" Betty sighed over the word as she spoke it. Jack went on eating; but wished he was Jack Frost, to live with Betty, sleep in that same snug bed upstairs every night, and feast on bread-and-milk every day by the side of such a blazing fire. No doubt these were Jack Frost's clothes he was wearing: he would ask Betty.

"And these are his clothes?" said he, aloud.

"Yes," again Betty sighed over the word.

"Where is he?" asked Jack.

"He ran away to sea, and was drowned," replied Betty, with tears in her eyes. Jack felt that lump coming into his throat again.

"I've a mind to take you in his place, for his sake and for the Great King's I was was reading about when you knocked at the door last night."

"Let me be Jack Frost?" cried the happy Jack.

"Yes; and take care of Neddy, instead of my slaving my old bones to death."

"Who's Neddy?" questioned Jack.

"My old donkey; I'm a 'tater woman, and tramp to town as many times as there are days in the year, except Sundays," said the little old woman.

"Oh!" gasped Jack.

"Well, what do you say to it?" asked Betty, smiling over her spectacles again.

"I'll stay, and be your Jack for ever, and ever, and ever!" responded Jack, striking out his spoon at her every time he muttered the word "ever".

Till death us do part," said Betty, as if speaking to herself.

I'll do all I can to make you live," replied Jack, with an inward quiver. Surely she would not die yet, but she was very thin, old and grey.

"But, mind, I've a comical temper," was Betty's warning, with a knowing nod of her grey head.

Jack laughed, and thought of Mr. Jerry Joker and his knotted cord.

"Never you fear," said he, "you don't keep a knotted cord, do you, Mrs. Betty?"

"I keeps all sorts o' things," was the vague reply; "you be my Jack, and I'll keep you."

"Yes; I'll be your Jack, and work like a horse."

So the agreement was made there and then, and from that time forth Jack was Jack Frst, and very proud he was of his surname you maybe sure, considering he had never possessed one before.

That very day he harnessed old Neddy into the cart and trotted to town with Betty, and a rare load of potatoes, winter carrots, parsnips, onions, greens, and such nice appes! There they threaded their way, up one street and down another, leaving their load little by little as they went along. When the cart was empty they went round to the coal wharf and took up a load of coal, and brought home for some one in the village. This was Betty's way of doing business, and she bade Jack take notice of all she said and did. Jack was not backward in obeying her, but opened his eyes and ears, and very much wondered to see her so honest in her dealings. Poor Jack! a good thing for you that God guided you to honest Betty Frost's cottage, and where so many things were to happen.

Our little men and women

The Guinea pigs.
(Children of a sunny land.)

If there is any place where children may have a good time the year round, it is on a Brazilian fazenda. Domingo thought it amusing to see the pack-mules start to market, and was out every morning to watch them. They were brought to the door of the fruit room, and the baskets hung on each side filled with shining fruit; long bunches of bananas, oranges like gold, and pine-apples ready to burst with juice.

At last they start off in line, one behind the other; the leader wears a tinkling bell.

One day Manuel's father thought he would send a new kind of a load to market. It was to be a big basket of Guinea pigs. Dear little soft, bright-eyed creatures. Manuel had fed them so long he did not want them to be sold, to be killed like chickens. Lena could not bear to bid them good-by, but Manuel stayed with them all the morning, and kissed their soft fur. When he heard the man comng for them, what do you think he did?

He had not meant to do so; no, indeed; he tried almost always to do just as his papa said; but now, he could not help it, he suddenly opened the door of their hutch, and they ran out; and away ran Manuel down the hillside with the little Guinea pigs at his heels. They stopped at the bamboo thicket; and when Manuel's papa got there, Manuel was crying with his pets in his arms. Did his papa punish him? No; he forgave his tender-hearted little boy, and told him his little pets should not be sold.

Tommy Toddles

Part I: Out of the ark
Chapter VII
The Guinea-Pig School

.... By this time they were nearing the foot of the hill. The road ran alongside of a stone-wall that was just about as high as Tommy's head, and it seemed to the little boy that he could hear, now and then, strange sounds, like squeals, coming from the other side of it. He asked the Sheep what the sounds were.
"That's the Guinea-Pig School in there," said the latter.
"It must be recess," remarked the ex-Pirate. "I can hear them playing.
"Are there Guinea-Pigs on the other side of that wall?" inquired Tommy, with much interest.
"Hundreds of them," said the ex-Pirate.
"Can't we climb up and look at them?"
"Of course we can." And in less time than it takes to tell about it all three had clambered to the top of the wall, and were looking down into the Guinea-Pig school-yard.
"Where is the school-house?" asked the little boy, as he gazed at the hundreds of funny little animals clambering over one another, playing tag and leap-frog, and every now and then giving little squeaks of delight. They did not even notice the three on-lookers sitting on the wall, so busy were they in having a good time.
"Did you know," said the ex-Pirate to Tommy, "that if you pick up a Guinea-Pig by the tail his eyes will fall out?"
"Uncle Dick told me so once, but I did not believe him."
"Well I'll show you," said the ex-Pirate, jumping down into the playground. He approached a Guinea-Pig who was not looking, and picked him up by the tail. Sure enough, his eyes fell out, and rolled around on the ground with a most terrified expression. Then the ex-Pirate put the little beast down again, and he groped about until he found his eyes, and put them back where they belonged. He looked quickly about to see who had played the trick on him, and, seeing the ex-Pirate laughing he stuck out his tongue at him, and ran away to join a group that was playing blind-man's-buff.
"Does not that hurt the Guinea-Pig?" asked Tommy.
"Certainly not," replied the ex-Pirate; "they like it. It tickles the eyes to roll about like that. Don't you see them playing blind-man's-buff over there?"
"Yes," assented Tommy. "Well, Guinea-Pigs don't carry handkerchiefs, so they have to do the best they can without them. The way they get around this is to take the one who is It, hold him up by the tail, and let his eyes fall out. Then he's just as blind as if he had his eyes bandaged with a handkerchief."
"And, it's cheaper, too," added the Sheep, as he fanned himself with his hat.
Tommy, of course, was much surprised at all the ex-Pirate had told him, but he said to himself philosophically that so many things had been surprising that afternoon that there was no reason why he should waste any emotion on the Guinea-Pigs.
"Did you ever hear them sing?" asked the ex-Pirate.
"Can they sing?" asked the little boy, gleefully. "They can sing," answered the ex-Pirate, "but they usually sing only just before vacation."
"And--"
"And now it's just after vacation."
"I wish they would sing," said Tommy, looking up at the ex-Pirate pleadingly.
"Perhaps I can persuade them to," said the latter, good-naturedly, for he understood that this was what Tommy wanted him to do. He walked over towards the group that was playing blind-man's-buff. As soon as they saw him approaching they scurried off in every direction, until they considered themselves out of his reach, and then they sat up on their haunches and stuck out their tongues, which was very ill-bred Guinea-Pigs, thought Tommy.
"I'm not going to hurt you!" shouted the ex-Pirate.
"Honest?" squeaked a little spotted Guinea-Pig, as he put his fore-paws up to his eyes to make sure they were there. "Really I'm not. I want you to sing." "It is not time to sing yet," said another Guinea-Pig, who

[Image: "The spotted guinea-pig sat out in front and beat time with his fore-paws"]

looked very wise, and winked at his companions as if he had discovered some ruse on the part of their visitor.
"No matter about that," urged the ex-Pirate. "Sing your song, and make believe you are practising for vacation."
The suggestion apparently struck the Guinea-Pigs favorably, for at heart they really enjoyed their singing very much. They all huddled together and held an excited debate, during which there were no end of squeaks and squeals, and they finally decided that they would sing--just once, "for practice."
So the ex-Pirate returned and sat down on the top of the stone-wall next to Tommy and the Sheep, and the Guinea-Pigs approached in a very dignified way, and arranged themselves in a semicircle in front of their audience. The spotted Guinea-Pig sat out in front, facing the others, and beat time with his fore-paws, while the others sang in chorus:

"Oh, let us away
To the land of Kathay,
Where the peppermint candy grows;
Where all the streets
Are paved with sweets,
And the lemonade river flows.

"We'll revel in quince,
And slices of mince,
And dine on chocolate-creams ;
And visions of tarts
Shall please our hearts,
And fill our peaceful dreams.

"Oh, let us away
To fair Kathay__
The summer days are coming.
For now we know
It's time to go ;
The bumblebees are humming."

"Of course, the bumblebees aren't humming," said the spotted Guinea-Pig, turning around. "This is only a practice song, you know."
The ex-Pirate thanked the little fellows for their courtesy. Thereupon they ran away again, and lifted one of their number up by the tail and resumed their game of blind-man's-buff.
"Where is the land of Kathay?" asked Tommy, as soon as the Guinea-Pigs had gone.
"Oh, it's miles and miles away," said the Sheep, and then he jumped down from the top of the wall, and told his companions to hurry along, for they had been wasting time in their journey to the top of the hill.
