V - Support & FAQs

Support for V is via email. If you are reporting bugs, please state what operating system you are using (XP/2000/2003/2008/Vista), what version of V you are using (displayed in the About box) and try to be as specific as you can about the problem.

For a detailed description of V's main features and how to use them, please consult the V Help File (press F1 while in V). Use the Index and Find tabs to search for what you are looking for.

If you want to know how to enable or disable a feature, take a look at all the options in the Preferences (select Preferences from the View menu or press Alt+P). Also try right-clicking to see what options are available.

If you get a message saying that Windows wants to send a report to Microsoft, please do the following:

Click on "To see what this error report contains click here"
There should be an 8 character offset under Error Signature (something like 0007b123). I need to know what this number is.
If you get an error message saying something like V has performed an illegal operation. The message should also contain a few 8 character numbers - I need to know what these are.

If possible, a screen shot of the error message would be very helpful.

Known Bugs (and features :-) Known Problems on Windows Vista

Version 9/10 will not run on Windows 95/98/Me/NT.
If you change/add a file association while V is running, V will continue to display the old file icons. In some cases, incorrect icons may be displayed. To fix this, you will have to restart V.
Viewing files can sometimes cause your Terminal Services session to disconnect. See FAQ below.
File tailing may not work on network drives (particularly Unix drives).

Using "." as the In Directory when doing a GREP may not work on network drives.
Greenbar does not always display properly in Print Preview - but it should print correctly.
Displaying Unicode files with foreign characters requires a font to be used that supports all characters in the file.
When a directory is entered into the Directory box, V will select the directory in the Explorer tree. This does not always work if the directory is a UNC (ie, in the format \\Computer\Directory)

How do I start V in the most recently viewed directory? Can I create ZIP files with V? Can I export the V settings?

Use the /R command line option, or enable "Always restore most recent directory on startup" in the Directory Options tab of Preferences. V only has in-built support for viewing/printing/extracting the contents of ZIP files. However, through User Commands and a third party ZIP utility, you may create ZIP files directly from V. Click here for details. Yes. V's program settings are stored in the Windows registry.

You can use the following program (VClone) to export them to a file and import them onto another system.
