You Can Make A Difference

Committee hearings

We encourage you to be involved!!! Scroll down the page for details of what you can do ..... write now.

Write to your local newspaper editors. Write to your local members of parliament.

Also visit our You Can Make a Difference page.

Here are some of the key issues being raised.

* Eliminate the misleading use of the terms 'recreational drugs' and 'soft drugs'.

* Call for the national policy to be focussed on comprehensive prevention of harm.

* Emphasise the need to focus all means possible on the prvention of induction to addiction.

* Encourage police to take all drug use and drug related crime seriously as a high priority and see it as an opportunity to break the addiciton cycle for users and prevent induction to addiction of our local youth.

* Put more money into treatment and rehabilitation that focus on getting people drug free and review harm management programs that have not only failed their own goals but also failed the Australian people.

* Withdraw money from treatment and rehabilitation programs that cannot show outcomes relevant to getting people drug free.

* Reject any sort of smoking or eating of cannabis / marijuana and protect patients by ensuring all medicines pass valid and strict medical protocols such as the Cochrane Collaboration and peer reviewed studies.

* Call for more compassion to be shown by our political leaders, especially for the suffering children of addicts. Children who are often neglected and who deserve better from a society who should put their welfare high on our national priorities.

Dear friends,

I was encouraged today to receive the attached press release (see below).

Can I please encourage you (URGENTLY AT THIS TIME) to write to the

Premier, bob.carr@www.nsw.gov.au and importantly to

John Della Bosca
Email : minister@transport.nsw.gov.au or Level 31 Governor Macquarie Tower
1 Farrer Place
Sydney NSW 2000

Phone: 9228 5665
Fax: 9228 5699

applauding his comments (see below) and letting him know of your views.

Also write to the NSW Opposition Leader

John Brogden - pittwater@parliament.nsw.gov.au

And Barry O&Mac226;Farrell - barry.o'farrell@parliament.nsw.gov.au

Andrew Stoner &Mac246; Leader of The National Party - oxley@parliament.nsw.gov.au

And your local member - http://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/prod/web/phweb.nsf/frames/members

Encouraging them to take similar anti-drug / prevention positions for the good of the community,

this is an issue where both sides of politics seem to clearly identify the public&Mac226;s demands,

but its good to remind them of what you&Mac226;ve got to say.

Write to newspapers congratulating him on this stand against drugs, for the family,

and for community initiatives and programs promoting the anti-drug and pro-family messages

I also encourage you to write to the Prime Minister, Leader of the Federal Opposition on this matter

(their contact details will be posted to our website next week)

If you aren&Mac226;t sure what to write, read our website, it will also be updated next week with some sample letters.

At a time when there can be some people encouraging confusion for their own agenda its important we encourage

senior government Ministers that make it plain and clear and stand up for the need to prevent drug abuse,

support the family and send a clear message about that stand.

Its also important that Della Bosca&Mac226;s comments have focussed not only on the indigenous community,

but particularly on the children for it is the children who suffer he most horrors of neglect and abuse due to drugs.

(which we also raised in media statements earlier this week)

Press Release by: Mr John Della Bosca Special Minister of State NSW, Minister for Commerce,

Minister for Industrial Relations, Assistant Treasurer and Minister for the Central Coast for the

Indigenous Australian&Mac226;s Theme Day of National Drug Action Week 2003.

26 June 2003 Indigenous communities take a stand during Drug Action Week

NSW Special Minister of State, John Della Bosca today announced a range of

Indigenous community-based projects for Drug Action Week.

The projects around New South Wales have been organised and implemented by Indigenous communities,

responding to their drug and alcohol issues with innovative ideas and events.

„The Illawarra/Shoalhaven Aboriginal Alcohol and other Drug Taskforce is today launching its

School Bus Program,‰ Mr Della Bosca said.

„This project involves high school students designing posters for school buses to advertise

anti drug and alcohol messages. The project is a joint partnership between the

Aboriginal Taskforce Network and the bus companies of Kiama, Nowra and Sussex Inlet.

Anti drug and alcohol themes developed by young people themselves are most likely to be accepted and to

convey the right messages,‰ Mr Della Bosca said.

The School Bus Program is one of a number of activities being held during Drug Action Week.

Drug Action Week is held in June each year to raise awareness about alcohol and other drugs and to

promote the achievements of those who work to address drug issues.

Each day of the Week has a different theme and today has a focus on Indigenous Australians.

„NSW actively supports Drug Action Week and will host over 30 events across the state during the course

of the week,‰ Mr Della Bosca said.

„We join communities in other States and Territories which are also highlighting the problems associated with

drug and alcohol use and celebrating the many achievements as part of Drug Action Week.‰

One of the highlights of the week has been the launch of Koori Family Matters.

Produced in partnership with Indigenous groups and services in the Illawarra/South East region of NSW,

Koori Family Matters is a family booklet which outlines valuable ways on how to approach drug issues in

Aboriginal families. It has been developed for parents, carers and other adults in a position to influence young people.

It is an extension of the Family Drug Information Kit launched late last year.

To support the NSW Cannabis Information Campaign, young Indigenous people in Brewarinna have developed artwork

with anti cannabis messages to encourage discussion amongst the indigenous youth community.

This week, Mr Della Bosca presented certificates to the young people who were involved in the development of the thought provoking posters.

„The efforts and enthusiasm of the young people in Brewarrina in devising and producing the images are outstanding.

I would personally like to acknowledge the contribution the young people of Brewarinna have made to the state-wide

cannabis campaign,‰ said Mr Della Bosca.

Drug Action Week is coordinated by the Alcohol and other Drugs Council of Australia (ADCA), the national peak body representing

the interests of the alcohol and drug field. It runs Drug Action Week to raise awareness of the problems associated with drug abuse and to

identify ways to better address them.

Dr Neal Blewett, President ADCA said, "The Indigenous theme day of Drug Action Week lets us celebrate our successes to date,

but also highlights the work that still needs to be done in order to reduce the disproportionate levels of alcohol and other

drug-related harm experienced by Indigenous Australians."
