Article 2 - The Cannabis Controversy I There is No Medical Excuse to use Marijuana Some people call this the great Cannabis lobby con. Medical marijuana doesn't exist, in fact marijuana is a harmful and dangerous drug and has no place in medicine, it doesn't in Australia nor does it anywhere around the world. Unfortunately there are lobby groups working to legalise the use of marijuana and have little concern who they use as stepping stones to get to that position. Why? Money, industry, personal vested interests, and more, there are many reasons that can be named, none of them are because marijuana is legitimate or beneficial medicine because international studies report the adverse affects are so significant they cannot recommend smoking or injesting marujuana. In some countries those lobby groups have persuaded legislatures to set aside medical protocols such as the Cochrane Collaboration and legalise cannabis anyway, with the excuse of it being for medical purposes. There is no such thing as smoking a harmful and dangerous illicit drug to gain some medical benefit. Smoking or injesting marijuna is ad hoc, non-standardised and contrary to strict medical protocols. Medical and scientific protocals are strictly adhered to for medicines for the safety of consumers, and all new medicines are required to be approved the the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration). The weight of scientific reports around the world that have already shown that smoking cannabis has more adverse and harmful side effects than any claimed benefits is in itself enough reason not to allow its use for any reason. A particularly strong warning comes from those in international jurisdictions who did not listen to those warnings and procceded towards legalised cannabis in this manner. There has been a such a significant rise in harms reported in those places that many people have suffered for their lack of caution. Governments must act wisely to protect the safety of the community. Governments must allow the scientific and medical communities to check and validate claims according to strict protocols that are in place for all medicines. These strict procedures mean that smoking marijuana simply isn't an option due to its significantly harmful adverse side affects. There are however valid medicines available for seriously ill patients. There is also research being conducted on synthetic cannabanoids. Cannabanoids are chemicals which can be extracted from the cannabis plant, but can also be synthesised. Importantly these synthesised cannabanoids can be made available without the dangerous step of farming vast amounts of marijuana crops. Synthesised cannabanoid medicines can also be tested, checked and regulated through valid medical protocols for the health, well being and safety of patients. |
