Dr
William Elyard was a surgeon in the Royal Navy in England. He came to Australia
in 1821, as Surgeon Superintendent on the Irish female convict ship "John
Bull", departing England on 25th July and arriving in Sydney on
18th December. His wife, Sarah, and 5 children accompanied him on the voyage. Once in
Australia, he was briefly appointed Superintendent of Carter's Barracks at
Brickfield Hill (January 1822 -
April 1823), before acquiring a property in the Stonequarry Creek area (now
called Picton), 40 miles southwest of Sydney, which he named "Wellington
Farm".
He
later applied for the creation of an office of Coroner for the County of Camden,
and on 16th March 1825 he was appointed this position. Held this office until
1829. Additionally, he served as an early magistrate in the area.
According
to the Australian Census Report of 1828, his land comprised 2,200 acres, of
which only 84 were cultivated/cleared, and he held 48 head of cattle. His son
Samuel once described this land, in his journals, as "useless hills".
During the 1830's, it appears he sold the property
at Stonequarry Creek, and moved to Burwood, a few miles west of Sydney. In the
Postal Directory of 1832, he was listed as "Senior Surgeon, Burwood". Both he
and his wife died in the Cook's River area of Sydney (now known St Peters and
Petersham), and were buried at St Peter's Church, Sydney.
There is little information on his wife, Sarah.
While she is believed to be a descendent of Sir Humphrey Gilbert, there is at
this stage no definite evidence of such.
The
following excerpt is from "Grave Reflections: A History of St Peter's
Graveyard", courtesy Laurel Horton, St Peter's Historical Committee:
William Elyard was compelled by health and circumstances to emigrate to New
South Wales. He was surgeon superintendent of the convict ship "John Bull"
which sailed from Cove of Cork. The "John Bull" was a female transport
and trouble arose when the master, William Corlett, and Elyard tried to prevent
prostitution between female convicts and members of the crew. The steward was
flogged for abusing Elyard, the second mate was thrown into irons for five days
and disrated for encouraging unruly prisoners to defy the surgeon. Later the
chief mate and two seamen were wounded in a fracas and the latter, after Elyard
had dressed their wounds, were placed in irons. Fearing an attempt to take over
the ship, Corlett and Elyard sat up, both armed, till 2 am. No further trouble
developed with the crew. The women, although Elyard threatened them with the
cat, were punished by being confined in the coal hole or hospital, one having
the added indignity of having a neck collar being placed on her. Arriving on
18th December 1821 he settled in Sydney with his wife Sarah (nee Gilbert) as
half pay naval surgeon and was appointed superintendent at the Carteršs Barracks
at Brickfield Hill. |
