William ELYARD was Chief Secretary of the New South Wales Colonial Secretaryıs Office. He was born in Rochester and came to Australia with his parents. In 1822 he was appointed temporary clerk in the Colonial Secretaryıs Department. Later in 1822, he became second clerk, in 1841 chief clerk. In 1856, as a result of the change to responsible government he was appointed Under-Secretary. His long service in the Colonial Secretaryıs Office provided administrative continuity at a critical transitionary time. He died unmarried. His funeral cortege, which "extended the entire length of William Street" was a tribute to the "importance of his services". A.B.Sparkıs diary, 9th August 1846, records: "The Elyards, William and Samuel, came from church with us and remained for dinner." Samuel Elyard painted a picture of Sparkıs Tempe House. - from "Grave Reflections: A History of St Peter's Graveyard", courtesy Laurel Horton, St Peter's Church Historical Committee |
