It should be noted that, in almost every branch of Gilbert's around the world, there exist family legends of a link to the famous Sir Humphrey Gilbert of Compton, Devon. Obviously not all are true, but equally, some are. The inclusion of this page does not indicate a definite link to my line. I have included it here simply for reference purposes, since there seem to be very few such lists on the internet.

The dates prior to 1550 are very speculative. Although the relationships are fairly well documented, it is difficult to know exactly when they were born or married. Errors or discrepancies of up to 10 years or more, either way, would not be unlikely. This is simply due to the fact that there can often be an abundance of conflicting dates from numerous sources, and the dates I have used are those that seem most credible and/or probable from the various sources.

This page will also remain, I believe, 'permanently unfinished'. Constant new or verifying information will be added as it is found.

His second expedition to America sailed from Plymouth on June 11, 1583. One ship, Barke Ralegh, turned back immediately because of illness, but Gilbert and the other ships arrived at St. John's, Newfoundland, on August 3 and took possession two days later. Because it was small and could explore harbors and creeks, Gilbert now sailed on Squirrel, a ship of 10 tons, rather than Delight, his 120 ton flagship. On August 29 the latter ship wrecked with the loss of 100 lives and many of Gilbert's records. On the return voyage to England to record his claim Gilbert remained aboard Squirrel rather than transferring to the larger Golden Hinde as urged by his men. On Monday, September 9, he was observed on deck reading a book. Later that evening the small ship disappeared, swallowed by the sea.
