Newspaper Article [Dixon Local Newspaper, June 7, 1887]:

John Gilbert was found dead in his bed this morning at the residence of J.C.Smith, on the Chicago road, South Dixon, about three miles from this city. Gilbert has been for a quarter of a century known through this section as a peddler of notions, "extracis" and cheap articles of that sort. He was aged seventy-four years and leaves a family at his home in Ontario, Canada. The cause of his death is not known. There were found on his person sixteen dollars and twenty cents, and in his wagon quite a stock of essence. His son, John T. Gilbert, of Chicago, telegraphs that he will be here this evening.

At the Mimico Hospital on Saturday last, Miss Annie Gilbert passed away in her 75th year. Miss Gilbert was a member of the family who for many years conducted a young ladies boarding school in Brampton. A familiar sight on the streets of the town was the long procession of girls walking to and fro, Miss Gilbert in the rear. A lady of quiet temperament, she was nevertheless widely known and esteemed for her many fine qualities. She was the last surviving member of the family who made their home here for many years in the earlier day of Brampton's history. She was a member of Christ Church during her residence in Brampton. The funeral took place from St. James cemetery chapel, Toronto, on Monday of this week.
