This web site has been created as a reference for collectors of the original ERTL range of Thomas the Tank Engine die-cast characters produced from 1984 until 2004. It has no relevance to the more recent ‘Take Along’ series of characters which feature magnetic couplings. Although both sets are made from die-cast (except for some plastic bodied characters), the original characters were more detailed and less toy like than their replacement counterparts.
Since production ceased, they have become very collectable with some models fetching in excess of ten times their original purchase price. As with any collectable, the value of each character is determined by its condition and its availability. A major source for collectors is the EBay web site where sellers from all over the world list items for sale every day. To evaluate a character’s availability, use the ‘search’ options, check ‘worldwide’, and check ‘completed listings’. If the character doesn’t show up, you can assume it’s pretty rare.

Also, don’t forget the ‘people’ characters. They are just as important to completing your collection as the trains and other mechanical characters.

You should also not overlook the catalogues, posters and brochures. In the case of ERTL, they are as rare as the proverbial ‘hen’s teeth’. If you can get your hands on one, it will detail the characters produced up until that time and can be an asset to your collection. Be prepared to part with serious money if you see these advertised!

I have listed all the collectibles in the range with photos where possible of some from my own collection. They are roughly grouped within the years they were first produced and where appropriate, I have added notes regarding their availability.

It is hoped that by having a comprehensive list of the entire series, more people will endeavour to complete their collection, thereby ensuring these wonderful classics never disappear. If you feel there may be an error or omission, please send me an email.
