1. When I download Spotlaser, I get a .bz2 file that doesn't mount. What am I doing wrong? You are not doing anything wrong. This is a known issue, most of the time it is a conflict with Safari and the application The Unarchiver. To fix this issue, just delete the .bz2 extension from the file name and you will now have a Disk Image that will mount in Finder.
2. What makes Spotlaser different to spotlight? Spotlaser allows the use of wilcard characters and the use of punctuation in your searches.
3. What is a wildcard character? The wildcard character is an asterisk - *. Use * to match one or more characters in your search terms. For example: *tick will match tick, stick, matchstick, etc. tick* will match tick, ticket, ticker, etc. *tick* will match tick, stick, sticker, ticket, ticker, matchstick, etc. *t*ck* will match tick, tock, tack, track, stock, stacker, etc.
4. Why doesn't Spotlaser find Mail messages, entourage messages or iCal events? The spotlight searching features at the heart of Mac OS X (on which Spotlaser is based) allows the searching of these types of files. Unfortunately, Finder doesn't play well when showing the results where these files are concerned. Instead of showing the subject field (in the case of emails) as the filename, it shows the .elmx filename instead. (An .elmx file is Mac OS Xs way of saving these files in its database.) Searching via the Spotlight menu in the top right corner of your screen will show these files, but searching from a Finder window will not. Because Spotlaser uses Finder to display its results, the same applies. Until Apple fixes this problem, Spotlaser will not display matches for these types of files.
5. Why doesn't the Who... field work? Why can't I type anything if the Who... field? There is a bug with this part of the window. The Who... field will only be able to be edited after the Spotlaser button at the bottom of the window is pressed at least once. This bug has been fixed and this feature will work properly in the next version of Spotlaser.
