Health effects of asbestos - animal experiments
The first publications [13, 14] were from one of the earliest intra-pleural inoculation experiments of rats conducted by the late Dr Christopher Wagner. The analysis [14] involved probably the earliest application of the Weibull distribution, that is the model that mesothelioma incidence increases as a power of time since exposure, to asbestos. This was followed by [18, 27] in which further experiments were analyzed and a linear dose-response relationship shown to be consistent with the mesothelioma incidence in animal experiments. The power relationship was used as a means of planning experiments in a statistical methods paper [34] and the results of the experiment are in [35]. Later inoculation experiments were reported in [51, 54].
The first inhalation experiments were reported in [32] and it was in this paper that the rapid elimination of chrysotile from the lungs was noted.
