DIFFERENCES BETWEEN DNEPR AND URAL®
DNEPR
- Dnepr engine has aluminum cylinders with steel sleeve
- Dnepr engine has friction (sleeve) bearings on connecting rod
- Dnepr has a two part connecting rod
- Dnepr has the oil pump in front cover
URAL®
- Ural engine has cast iron cylinders.
- Ural has a needle bearing on big end of connecting rod.
- Ural has a one piece connecting rod.
- Ural has oil pump driven by camshaft. (Well known BMW design)
Gear case assembly is interchangeable between the two bikes, but the
gears inside are different. Dnepr was given the design by Ural.
The Dnepr semi automatic (clutchless) gearshift does not work well and
is unreliable. The Dnepr clutch is only used for starting.
The Dnepr has no luggage compartment lid. The seat must be removed to
get to the storage area.
Only Ural has leading link front fork. EML forks can be installed on
Dnepr (and BMW).
Same alternators, but Russian supply (Ural) is OK, Ukraine (Dnepr)
difficult.
Brakes are the same, but DNEPR has a cable instead of a solid rod for
the sidecar wheel.
There is a German company that buys Dnepr 16 (2 wheel drive) without
engines and installs Ural engine or rebuilt BMW engine. Logical
conclusion which is reinforced by other data, is that Dnepr engine is
inferior to Ural.
