So Why isn't my doctor / psychiatrist aware about this?

The fact is medical research into any illness requires significant funding.  With the enormous financial pressures upon our medical intuitions today, privately funded studies are now relied upon to 'fill the gap' and provide the majority of current research into mental illness . These groups report their research to the medical authorities, which in turn use the findings to form the basis of the current understanding and  future direction of research into mental illness.  Current medical research into mental illness points to 'structural and functional changes in the brains' and therefore all treatment is now directed to control and manage the resulting neurochemical imbalances with 'brain specific medications'.  Most of these privately funded studies (which now form the basis of the current understanding into mental illness) often obtain research grants from pharmaceutical companies.  The channelling of funds into research geared to provide medication based outcomes is important to pharmaceutical companies and is common practice. With the majorty of research into mental illness being backed with an interest to ensure a drug-only based treatment ,  both the direction of research and focus of treatment of mental illness is currently be biased, particularly when no other alternative is provided by the majority of accepted research.  In ensuring a medication based treatment, with life long dependence (due to the fact that the symptoms can only be 'suppressed' but not cured by the medication)  a profitable long-term outcome is gained from this research by the pharmaceutical companies.  Without other diagnostic criteria or understanding of other possible causative agents, doctors and physiatrists are oblivious to any other possible forms of treatment, other than medication, as they can only follow standard protocols provided by the medical authorities.
