James Bain (1776 - 1855)

James Bain was born on 28 April 1776 in Tranent, East Lothian. He was the only child of James Bain and Ann Turcan. James Snr had died tragically prior to James birth.

He was christened shortly after his birth on 28 April 1776 in Tranent. Whilst his grandfather William Bain was present at his christening, not long after his birth he and his mother moved back to her family in Dysart, where the boy was was brought up by his maternal relatives. He had little to do with the his fathers family after this.

He suffered from pulminory ailments (the same thing that killed his father) from an early age and was recommended to adopt an active profession. When he was 19 he was appointed to the charge of the Dysart Estates, on the recommendations of his distant cousin, Lord Robertson, a Senator of the College of Justice and the eldest son of Principal Robertson.

The following year, on 23 December 1796 he married Margaret Thompson at Kirkcaldy in Fife. Banns were read in Dysart, Fife on 8 December 1796.

Margaret was born on 14 October 1776 in Dysart, Fife, the eldest daughter of James Thompson and Margaret Rait. She was christened 4 days later.

James and Margaret, continued the family tradition of birthing in Tranent, East Lothian. They 12 children (4 daughters and 8 sons), all notated as being born in East Lothian and christened in Fife.

The family continued to live in Dysart for many years. Margaret passed away in Dysart on 10 February 1830 at the age of 53, leaving James with 4 children under the age of 20.

James held the office of Chamberlain to the Earl of Rosslyn for a long time, and was stll living in Dysart at the time of his death on December 28 1855 at the age of 79.
