James Bain
(1776 - 1855)
James Bain was
born on 28 April 1776 in Tranent, East Lothian. He was the only
child of James
Bain and Ann Turcan. James Snr had died tragically
prior to James birth.

after his birth on 28 April 1776 in Tranent. Whilst his grandfather

birth he and his mother moved back to her family in Dysart, where
the boy was was brought up by his maternal relatives. He had little
to do with the his fathers family after this.
He suffered from pulminory
ailments (the same thing that killed his father) from an early age
and was recommended to adopt an active profession. When he was 19
he was appointed to the charge of the Dysart Estates, on the recommendations
of his distant cousin, Lord Robertson, a Senator of the College
of Justice and the eldest son of Principal Robertson.
The following
year, on 23 December 1796 he married Margaret Thompson at Kirkcaldy
in Fife. Banns were read in Dysart, Fife on 8 December 1796.
Margaret was
born on 14 October 1776 in Dysart, Fife, the eldest daughter of
James Thompson and Margaret Rait. She was christened
4 days later.
James and Margaret, continued
the family tradition of birthing in Tranent, East Lothian. They
12 children (4 daughters and 8 sons), all notated as being born
in East Lothian and christened in Fife.
