My Bain Family

Historically it has been identified that the Bain family originated from Invernesshire with the clan lands located on the hills surrounding Loch Ness (for more information check out the Bain Name Meaning). However, the clan were relocated after the Jacobite uprisings.

Current research identifies our line of the Bain family as originating in Longniddry in the Parish of Tranent, East Lothian (the Haddingtonshire) in the late 1500s. The family has a long line of residence in Tranent, Gladsmuir and Haddington right thru to the early 1800s, when the primary lines appear to have dispersed to Glasgow, Lanark and Dysart, Fife.

The earliest known member of our Hardie line is George Bain (AKA Bene) who was born about 1580 in Longniddry. However little is known of the Bain family before the documentation of a Thomas Brown in the Judicial Rental and a Tenant List for Seaton in the 1660s. George's great grandson Thomas Bain is the first in the family for whom detailed records exist.

John Bain Esq. of Glasgow, Thomas's great grandson, married Isabella Todd, descended of Robert the Bruce and John Knox thru her maternal line.
