David
Hardie (1850 - 1934)
David Hardie
was born on 8 April 1850. He was the ninth child and youngest son
of James
Hardie and Sarah Bladworth.
It is thought
that his brother Richard
convinced him to migrate to America after he returned home from
New Orleans in 1879. David was living with his mother, two sisters
and his brother James at11 Alva St, Edinburgh St Cuthberts in Edinburgh
in March 1881 when the census was taken. At the time he was working
as a wine broker most likely in his father business which had been
left to his brother John.
David eventually
followed Richard to America in about 1882, moving to Dallas. It
is uncertain what he did between 1882 and 1899 when he and Richard
founded the Hardie Seed Company. After Richards death, his nephews
took over his share and helped him run the company until he retired.
He left his share to Richard's sons after his death.
David Hardie
never married, but he was close to his brother's family. His brother's
grandson Richard Bladworth Hardie Jr. [really III] remembers that,
his own Hardie grandfather having died in 1917 before he was born,
his great-uncle David Hardie was “like a grandfather” to him.
David Hardie
died in Dallas on 22 March 1934, shortly before his 84th birthday.
