Other Jessops
Kirkburton
Jessops
Some of the
earliest notations of Jessops in England are found in the Kirkburton
parish of Yorkshire, The family continued there right through to
the twentieth century. Their connection to the Broom Hall Jessops
is unknown, but it is supposed that William Jessop of Rothersham
(progenitor of the Broomhall line) was in fact a Kirkburton Jessop.
One of the first names in the Kirkburton parish registers which
date from 1540-41 is Johana Jesope. Kirkburton Church, was erected
in the thirteenth century and during a later restoration evidence
was found of a church that dated back to the fourth century.
Suffolk
Jessops
There appears
to be a different line in East Anglia (Essex, Suffolk & Norfolk),
which may in fact be linked, the first notation of this line is
in the early 1500s, with a notation in a Suffolk subsidy roll in
1524. At Mendlesham where there were a number of families of the
name. An Edmund/Edward Jessopp appears as grandson and heir of Henry
Jessopp of Mendlesham, gent., in the 20th Elizabeth (A.D. 1578).
There are other Jessops found just after this across the Thames
estuary in Essex that are thought to be the same family.
Other
Yorkshire Jessops
There continue
to be lines of Jessops in the Sheffield area, again, these are most
likely descended from Laerence Sheffield (son of William & Emmot),
however in the 1800s, it appeared that they knew nothing of their
ancestory. It is this family who made 'a lot' of money in steel
manufacture, particularly cutlery, edge tools and engineer and gained
renown for their cutlery steel in the US. The family also produced
Thomas Jessop, the Mayor of Sheffield in 1864 and founder of Sheffields
Jessop Hospital for Women.
