FLYCUTTER FOR ARBOR MOUNTING

The arbor is the one that came with the mill/drill. I decided to make a slab type flycutter to mount on it. The body is a piece of cast iron turned to 115mm (4-17/32") diameter. The tungsten carbide tip is mounted on a simple shaft with a flat milled along the side so the grub screw can locate it.

The tip is a double sided Trigon shape, giving 6 cutting points. As can be seen there is a lot of cutting rake built into the tip so I milled the location recess so as to give both front and side clearance. Even with the tip on the angles it still has top rake so should be excellent for Aluminium, steel and other metals that cut better with positive rake. I have also used this cutter on cast iron and it cuts very well.

You can see that the tool holder shank is below the top surface, this is to equalise about the same weight that is protruding from the bottom face, ie shank and tip weight. I have spun the cutter up quite high speed and there is no major imbalance.
