Yes – back together in 2008? Ý |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
The general plans still seem to be looking towards a 40th anniversary tour in 2008 without anything signed, sealed or delivered, as noted in this recent interview on the Rock Radio with Chris Squire. It is also noteworthy that in an interview Jon did last October that has been released in his boxed set, he implies that he left Yes in 2004. So there is still a long way to go before any reunion is to occur. And yes, I think it is now time to call it a reunion because for all intents and purposes Yes is not a current entity. |

Yes - solo and collaboration tours 2006

Jon Anderson - USA February 2007 Jon will be appearing in Paul Green’s ‘School of Rock All Stars’ on the US east coast for five gigs starting on February 14th in Falls Church, Virginia and finishing on February 19 at BB King’s Blues Club New York City with Paul Green’s School of Rock. More details from Jon’s website. Asia - March 2007 Japan
& Latin America tours The original Asia line-up – Steve Howe guitars, Geoff Downes keyboards, John Wetton bass/vocals and Carl Palmer drums will tour Japan from March 4-11 2007 with 7 dates announced. Following that they will tour Latin America from March 14 – 25 starting in Mexico City and finishing in Caracas, Venezuela. There have also been two dates announced for Germany in July with further European dates to be announced and strong rumours of a US leg in June with Foreigner as well. More details can be found at the official Asia reunion website. There does not seem to be much chance of an Australian tour. Steve Howe has also dismissed the rumours of a joint Asia/Yes tour. |

New Yes and Yes solo releases Ý |

Yes Rhino have released another 2-CD
compilation ‘The Definitive Rock Collection’. The track list is Time And A Word , Starship Trooper , Yours Is No
Disgrace , I've Seen All Good People, Roundabout, Long Distance Runaround ,
Heart Of The sunrise, South Side Of The Sky, And You And I, America (Single
Edit), Wonderous Stories, Siberian Khatru, Soon (New Edit), Going For The One,
Don't Kill The Whale, Tempus Fugit, Owner Of A Lonely Heart, Leave It, It Can
Happen (Single Edit), Rhythm Of Love, Big Generator (Remix), Lift Me Up, The
Calling (Single Edit), Open Your Eyes, Homeworld (Radio Edit), Magnification. I
find this a strange compilation – it is the same track list to the US version
of The Ultimate Yes Collection without the acoustic bonus disc. Difficult to
know why they would do that. According
to Henry Potts website,
a Live in Montreux 2003 DVD will be released in 2007, allegedly around March.
This is from the Montreux Festival and is said to feature the entire set list –
Siberian Khatru; Magnification; Don't Kill The Whale; In The
Presence Of; We Have Heaven/South Side Of The Sky; And You And I;
To Be
Over/Clap; Show Me; Wakeman Solo; Heart Of The Sunrise; Long Distance
Runaround/Whitefish/On The Silent Wings Of Freedom; Awaken;
I've Seen All
Good People; Roundabout. Of course this is pretty much the set list we saw in
Australia in 2003 so it will be a great reminder of that tour. Anderson
Bruford Wakeman Howe Voiceprint has released a limited edition DVD
of An Evening of Yes Music Plus, in Digipak packaging, complete
with booklet and original artwork from Roger Dean. According to Voiceprint,
‘the package, which had been available on VHS for only a short time back in
1994, will contain two discs; disc one features the live concert, while disc
two is a limited edition bonus containing In The Big Dream, which was
originally available only on VHS in 1989. In The Big Dream features
footage of the band recording its self-titled album, Anderson Bruford Wakeman
Howe, as well as rare video spots and shorts. The bonus disc also sports
contemporary interviews from the period, and will only be available as part of
the limited edition package. Once the initial limited edition of 2,000 copies
is sold, the package reverts to single disc package in a DVD box without the In
The Big Dream bonus material.’ Subsequently Voiceprint has announced that
due to overwhelming demand they have printed an extra 1000 copies of the
limited edition. The package is available in two versions – a
1000 copy limited edition signed by the group which costs £24.99 (approx.
$62.50), an unsigned limited edition 1000 copy limited edition that costs
£19.99 (approx $50), and the standard DVD that costs £14.99 (approx $37.50). The CD of An
Evening of Yes Music Plus has also been re-released. According to Voiceprint ‘the
audio has been beautifully restored, and will also be available as a Digipak
package. The An Evening of Yes Music Plus CD package includes a
bonus track not previously available on the European edition of the original
album, and the track order has also been re-structured to reflect the true
concert set list, including the missing track I've Seen All Good People.’
The double CD costs £14.99 (approx $37.50). Full details concerning ordering including a
link to view a sample of the DVD can be found at: http://www.abwhdvd.com/ Jon
Anderson Although
announced in the last newsletter, Animation was recently re-released http://www.jonandersonanimationcd.com/
and of course The Lost Tapes Boxset is now
available from Daniel Earnshaw’s Explore Multimedia website. While
there will eventually be 20 discs in the set, they are being released over a
period of time. Currently the following discs have been announced: CD 1 – Interview
with Jon Anderson recorded in late October 2006. CD 2 – ‘The Mother’s Day concert’, California 1996 CD 3 – ‘Searching for the Songs’ - 1986. CD 4 – ‘Live in Sheffield 1980’ CD 5 Watching the Flags that Fly – 1990 CD 6 The Lost Tapes of Opio – 1989 CD 20 Binaural in Boston – 2005
The cost of these 7 albums is £80 + £10 postage to Australia
(that converts to approximately $225 in Australian dollars). Voiceprint will be releasing the double CD Live In La La Land in March. This was a limited release
album that could previously only be bought from either Jon's website or at his
live concerts. This album captures Jon during one of his many solo tours away
from Yes live at the Roxy in Los Angeles. Jon is
also a guest vocalist on a new DVD ‘Ritual
Path’ which is described as a ‘Journey into the Spirit of Nature’. It
is not stated what song(s) Jon sings. Patrick
Moraz The latest
re-release announced by Voiceprint is the 1995 DVD ‘Patrick Moraz Live at
Princeton’. It
features Patrick on piano. Other re-releases mentioned in the last newsletter were his Future Memories DVD and his 1987 album ‘Human Interface’. Rick
Wakeman Rick will be releasing a
‘Rick Wakeman DVD Archive’ series of ‘Official DVD Bootlegs’ that is based upon
his personal video archive. The shows will include performances from the 70s,
80s and 90s. More details including the contents will be announced in early
2007 with the release date anticipated in the first half of the year. More
details from Voiceprint.
As mentioned in the last
newsletter, the next re-release of one of Rick’s albums by Voiceprint will be
his 1995 album ‘Cirque
Surreal’ in January 2007. |

The ABC
My Favourite Album poll results were announced in early December and Close to
the Edge came in at a very respectable 69. Prog and ‘borderline’ prog music did
quite well - Dark Side of the Moon (Pink Floyd) came in at #1, OK Computer (Radiohead) #3, Wish you were here
(Pink Floyd) #11, The Wall (Pink Floyd)
#14, The Bends (Radiohead) #15, Aenima (Tool) #21, Kid A (Radiohead) #35,
Lateralus (Tool) #40, Absolution (Muse) #59, Tubular Bells (Mike Oldfield) #89.
The full list is here. Peter Banks has a MySpace page through which you can access some of his recent
Harmony in Diversity work. Jon
Anderson’s May 12, 1996 Mother’s Day concert has been posted on YouTube. The
following songs are there – I’ll find my way home; Wonderous Stories;
Children of Light;
Time and a Word; Owner of a Lonely
Heart; Longwalker Speaks; Change we Must; Rivers Flow; One More Time; And You And I; State of
Independence intro; Some of
you probably have copies of the following Olias clips from the Old Grey Whistle
Test in 1976. If not here is the The Flight of the
Moorglade and an interview. And here is the 1991 MTV Rockumentary on Yes – Part 1; Part 2; and Part 3; Trevor Rabin was interviewed about some of his recent
soundtracks – Snakes on a Plane, Flyboys and the upcoming National Treasure 2 a
while back but I only recently found it on the Tracksounds website. Henry
Potts neatly summarised the Yes events of 2006 in this post on Yesfans. Interested
in old photos of Yes? Well Repfoto is the place to go – plenty of great photos of Yes
and numerous other rock acts. There are photos of Yes from many of their famous
gigs including the Rainbow Theatre concert in 1972 when Yessongs was filmed,
Rock in Rio from 1985, the reading Festival from 1975, QPR from 1975 and some
great early shots from 1969. More Jon
Anderson music! At Wolfgang’s Vault
radio you can listen to
Jon’s Animation tour (1982) concert from Asbury Park, NJ . The setlist has a
healthy range of Yes songs, songs from Animation and some Jon & Vangelis
favourites. And here
is Jon Anderson singing Circle of Life from Excalibur II. Don’t
forget to listen to Rick Wakeman on
Planet Rock radio show on Saturday evenings at www.planetrock.com from around 7pm – 10pm EST. |

The 2006 Sydney YesFANZ Christmas Party was held on Sunday December 3rd at the Gladstone Hotel, 572 Marrickville Road, Dulwich Hill. Nearly 20 YesFANZ members attended on a cool,
cloudy, windy afternoon. The food was great as was the company. A very generous
donation from Anne Corris, Bernardo Pulgar and Michael Rayfield including
signed memorabilia from the Jon & Rick tour were raffled and over $200 was
raised for YesFANZ. My photos of the afternoon can be viewed here. Many YesFANZ
members have formed a table to see CODA play
at the Vanguard on Friday February 16.
Robert Forbes has pre-paid for 20 tickets and they
are all allocated. For people who want to add extra people to our night, the
easiest way to do this is to book on-line as the tickets have to be pre-paid.
When you book on-line at www.thevanguard.com.au (link takes you to Moshtix) there is an area on the webpage where you
can add free text, and the site suggests that this is where you can request to
be added to a party booking; so here you can add "please include my
seat(s) with the group booking made by Robert Forbes". If in doubt there
is a phone number you can call or you can buy at these places: BALMAIN: Fish Records Balmain, 289 Darling St. BONDI BEACH : Electric Monkeys, 78-80 Gould St BONDI JUNCTION: The Music

I have just discovered
another Australian prog band – Cosmic Nomads. They are
from Melbourne and are releasing their second album entitled ‘Vultress’ in February. According to
their website ‘The band's influences are
Emerson Lake and Palmer, Deep Purple, Genesis, Yes, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Pink
Floyd, Frank Zappa and King Crimson; as well as composers Bach, Mussorsky and
Debussy.’ Their first album was
entitled ‘Make Love Not War’. The Cosmic Nomads line
up is: Ray ‘goldfingers’
Vanderby-Hammond organ/lead vocals; Gina Woods-Wurlitzer piano/synthesiser;
Geoff Brown-bass; ‘King’ Con Patogiannis-guitar/vocals; Miam Lentini-drums; Anni Lang-vocals/percussion. You can hear
some of their music on MySpace

The general plan
is as follows. We would like any interested YesFANZ members to submit three
ORIGINAL songs that you own copyright to. In submitting the songs you will be
required to sign a release about the free use of the material on a YesFANZ CD.
Any profits made from this CD will go to support YesFANZ Inc. At this stage we
are looking for expressions of interest to be involved. So far Bob Forbes,
Franky Valentyn and Chris Martinic have indicated they will submit songs. Please contact me on b.d.draper@bigpond.com if you want to be involved. |
