A timber block was glued to the bottom of the front deck and the deck was then glued onto support frames around the inside edges of the bow. The mast tube was glued to the support and deck. Strips were added to the inside gunwales so that the final gunwale width was about 36mm. A surform plane and rasps were used to tidy up the top edge of the laminated gunwale
The rubbing strip(s) at the gunwales were laminated from two10mm by 25mm pieces of coachwood left over from a previous project. It needed lots of clamps to hold the strips in position while the glue set. Support blocks were also glued to the top sides of the centreboard casing.
We decided to try an unstayed mast. Having carted around the mast from the failed catamaran for the last twenty years it was resurrected, dismantled and rejuvenated. The 40mm aluminium tube and sail track extrusion were sanded and coated with etch primer followed by gloss enamel.
The mast step was cut from a piece of hard Queensland Maple and a recess drilled in the top to accept a short length of 50mm PVC drainage pipe. The step was glued and fibreglassed to the inside of the hull and the tube then fibreglassed to the mast step.
A piece of timber was added to the inside of the bow to provide support for a towing hook
