ACCORDING TO THOMAS AND AGNES Henderson's bible their daughter Jane Ludden was born at Doctors Creek, near Lexton, on the 16 July 1883. She was the seventh of eleven children, 9 daughters and 2 sons born to Thomas and Agnes Henderson nee Grayling.
It wasn't uncommon for the Hendersons to include family surnames in their children's names. The Ludden in Jane Ludden Henderson comes from Jane's grandmother Jane Grayling nee Ludden. Although baptised Jane, Jane was also referred to as Jean.

According to her daughter Jean Sherwood, Jane was quite small, only 4 foot 10 inches tall and weighed 6 stone. She had brown eyes, red hair and a very calm and easy going disposition. Her early childhood was spent at Doctors Creek, north-east of Ballarat. Around 1891, the family left Doctors Creek, and moved to Balrooten a small rural community about 8 kilometres from Nhill. Jane was about 9 years old at the time. She went to Balrooten State School until 1895, when at the age of 12 she left.

When Jane turned 20 (this would have been in 1903) she went to work for a Mrs. Brown of Nhill. The Browns owned a general store in McPherson Street. According to one of their many advertisements in the local newspaper the Browns sold every thing from farm equipment to household items. The store stocked; furniture, bedding, crockery, French linens, Japenese silks, exquisite millinery along with a large choice of ready-to-wear clothing, boots and shoes.

Jane lived with the Browns helping out when they entertained of an evening. As a housemaid she would help serve supper to the guests. Jane stayed with the Browns up until she married Arthur Sherwood in 1909.
Around 1909, Jane's mother Agnes and her unmarried daughters left the family farm at Balrooten and bought a house in West Brunswick.
Jane moved into the house with her mother and sisters two weeks before she married Arthur Sherwood. The marriage took place on 15 February 1909, in the gardens of the house at 30 Rose Street Brunswick. William Lynch was best man and Minnie Sherwood (Arthur's sister) was the flower girl. Jane's mother Agnes Henderson and Arthur's mother Minnie Sherwood were also present. Jane and Arthur later honeymooned in Portland, Victoria. While in Portland they took a trip on a boat. It was all too much for Arthur, as he got seasick from the boat ride.
