My grandmother Jane Sherwood nee Henderson's family can be traced back to Falkirk, Scotland. It was there in 1818 that her great grandfather Thomas Henderson I married Janet Allan. Two years later in 1820, their son Thomas Henderson II was born at Delgatie Castle, Aberdeenshire. Thomas Henderson I was a gardener and was most likely employed at Dalgety when his son was born there. Several years later a daughter Agnes was born. In 1836 Thomas and Janet and their 2 children arrived in Adelaide on the Coromandel. Their son Thomas Henderson II (Jane's grandfather) married Sarah Hamilton in Adelaide in 1842. The following year their first son Thomas Henderson III (Jane's father) was born.
Tragically Jane's grandfather Thomas was accidentally crushed to death while crossing the Maribyrnong river on a punt. His son Thomas Henderson III witnessed the accident. Around 1891 the Henderson family left Doctors Creek and selected land at Balrooten, near Nhill, Victoria. The Hendersons established a successful wheat farm at Balrooten. In 1906 Thomas died of heart failure. He was 63. Agnes moved to Melbourne in 1909, where she bought a house in Brunswick.
Agnes died in Melbourne in 1925. She was 73. One of the purposes of this Web site is to encourage interested Henderson family descendants to submit material on the family. If you would like to submit photos, biographical information or any other items of interest please feel free to contact me.
