TALK #5: A LIFE OF WORSHIP

MYC 2004, Paul Grimmond

1. BRAIN EXPLOSIONS

·          there are a couple of ways you can have brain explosions at MYC:

o        frustation

o        when we realise something we’ve never thought before and our lives are changed by the Word of God.

·          Live with God’s worldview rather than your own worldview.

·          Romans 12:1-3, as our minds are changed, and thus our lives are changed, then we become godly worshippers.

2. RECAPPING THE WEEK

·          At creation, worship is obedience.  But outside the garden, sacrifices are introduced.  BUT, because of our sinfulness, sacrifices are made useless.  Then Christ comes, obedience and sacrifice applies, and in repsonse to relationship, we give our lives for God.  Thus sacrifice = obedience = our lives.

·          Biblical theology is what we’ve been doing this week.  It’s understanding a subject in light of God’s unfolding plan in the bible.

·          The framework of this is creation...fall...old covenant...new covenant...Christ..........

·          Systematic theology is not dull!!  (It’s the grappling of one issue/theme in the bible – wrestling with God’s word to understand the big ideas).

·          This theology process is an all of life process; its not merely intellectual.

3. USING THAT KNOWLEDGE

(i) In terms of our actions

·          James 1:22-25, reading the scriptures is like looking into a mirror, seeing REALLY what we’re really like on the inside in the face of the living God.

·          Work it out in our lives, putting into practice what we believe.

·          Pray for boldbess in evangelism, remember God’s sovereignty and power, and his spirit changing.

(ii) Use this knowledge in love

·          Knowledge is a dangerous thing because it can puff up (1 Cor 8:1, 13:1-3, Eph 4:15)

·          Knowledge in the hands of sinful people is dangerous, because it causes pride.

·          Therefore guard your heart in the ungracious application of these things.

·          We though, speak the truth in love; its unhelpful for us to stay silent for fear of rocking the boat.  Thus we MUST speak the truth in love.

4. A WARNING ABOUT MYC

·          The whole bible IS NOT about worship!!  We’ve understood alot of other things which’ve been peripheral to worship – eg. Nature of sin, of God etc.  We could’ve just as easily called MYC ‘obedience’ and only need to change a few things around.

5. A LIFE OF WORSHIP

·          We conclude MYC on this note, and this verse:

·          “As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture:

“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
a cornerstone chosen and precious,
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,

“The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone,”

and

“A stone of stumbling,
and a rock of offense.”

They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.”
