Saturday 8th January 2000 was the date for our 9th annual fishing trip. We returned to Western Port Bay and again used Western Port Fishing Charters. It was a pretty successful trip given that the group pulled in 75 large King George Whiting as well as Bay Trout, Flathead and Silver Trevally. Saturday night was spent at the Flinders pub as usual and we dined in the bistro. It was memorable in that John Elliott the then Carlton President and his family sat at a table next to us. Bob Hepburn took umbrage to the fact that the greedy, and as he prophetically called them ‘the cheating’ clubs were surviving and thriving at the expense of his beloved Fitzroy Lions who had merged previously with Brisbane. Bob told ‘big Jack’ Elliott in no uncertain terms what he thought of him and his club and what they were doing to the A.F.L. (2 years later it would be revealed that Carlton under the leadership of Jack Elliott had been found guilty of serious salary cap breaches). Bob gave the Elliott’s a vitriolic spray and Mrs. Elliott gave as good back, so much for a quiet beer and dinner.  After tea we made our way to the Main Bar, where we were entertained by a great little band who played a variety of contemporary and classic cover songs. Peter Adams continued his quest to find Greg Anderson a bride. Instead he managed to match-make Marcus Fraumano with the lovely Lisa, or as many of us prefer to phrase it ‘Frog cut Ando’s lunch’. As usual we were the last to leave. Golf was played at Flinders Golf club next day and Philip Barnes won the coveted Trophy in his debut tournament.
