Hi, I am John Shield. From 1994 to 2002 I worked in Australia as a full time professional storyteller. At the end of 2002 I retired from full time work, sold my house, disposed of most of my possessions and moved myself to Thailand.

During 2003, I was based at Mahasarakham University in the north east of Thailand—the region known as Isaan. I taught (or assisted in teaching) English which gave me the opportunity to tell an occasional story.

I started 2004 in Singapore and after a month I moved to Melaka in Malaysia where I stayed for six months. The rest of the year was spent back in Mahasarakham with a side trip to Laos.

Early in 2005 I visited Cambodia. I was particularly touched by the warmth of the people in Kompong Chhnang and promised to return. During 2005 I travelled back to Australia twice.

I have now returned to Cambodia and am teaching English in a school attached to a Buddhist monastery, Wat Xam, in Kompong Chhnang.

One of the purposes of this site is to keep my friends, and anyone else who is interested, up to date with my travels and what I am doing.

Storytelling’s Peter Pan An interview with June Barnes from Swag of Yarns in which I tell of my career and philosophy as a storyteller.

Reading between the lines An article from the Townsville Bulletin about my work in storytelling and literacy. Important reading for parents.

Latest news of my travels.

Well, actually I borrowed the robe from a friend. Just trying it on for size. I think I might find it hard to behave like a monk 24 hours a day. (fz20)
