The last two years have been very eventful on the Guinea Pig front.
Earlier in 2004 our large tribe of piggies was visited by some visitors
(Zoe and Belle), who were staying with us while their owners went on holidays.
The first few days of their stay was punctuated with minor scuffs, much
squeaking and a lot of swaggering.
But when the pecking orders had been sorted out, our piggies and
the visiting piggies got along quite well.
Sadly Cary died in February 2004 after a long illness. A couple
of months after Cary’s death, we came out one morning to find Fluffy and
Toffee dead from a suspected dog attack. It must have been a very smart
dog, as it pulled the cover off the hutch and opened the latch to get to
them. A couple of months later our friends lost Zoe to a dog attack.
We think it may have been the same one that killed our pigs.
We decided after this incident to keep our pigs inside at night,
just in case.
Earlier this year (2005) our beloved Blue literally disappeared
without a trace while James was getting the kids from school. We think
a fox may have taken him, as we found the other two pigs in opposite sides
of the garden, visibly distressed. After this, we decided to keep the pigs
in their hutches at all times.
Sméagol and Smudge don't seem to mind these new arrangements
very much; they actually seem to be glad they no longer have do any exercise.
Sméagol and Smudge in the garden, unfortunately since Blue
disappeared they have been confined to their hutch.
