Twin Shay. Painting by Phil Belbin.
Hauling 2 tank wagons and 32 Dreadnought shale wagons, Wolgan Shays number 3 and 2
pass the Bluffs under Cape Horn. They will soon take water at the stop in Bell's Grotto,
before continuing on to Dean's siding and thence to Newnes Junction with a load nearing 400 tons.
Loading was limited on these steep sections of 1 in 25 grades, so that if the train stopped for any reason
it would be able to restart without too much wheel slip. The steepest 15 km section of 1 in 25 grades
was between Constance and Dean's siding, the total distance between Newnes and Newnes Junction station
being about 52 km. (Painting by Phil Belbin - Copyright Phil Belbin 1999).
