It was the final round of our Club Championships last night. We had a Three way tie for first place Stephen Solomon, Jonathan Sarfati and Felix Klien. In the u1600 division we also had a three way tie David Cigelj, John Surridge and Mark Cervenjak also finishing equal 4-8th over all. In the u1200 division we had a clear winner Aaron Downey that also finished equal 9-13th overall. See full details here

You may have noticed a different look and feel to the website. Well we have an added feature and extra menu item Tutorials. YouTuber Matt Pullin aka GreenCastle has allowed us to embed his tutorial videos on this site. I will be developing this page as time goes by refining the navegation as it grows. I am also looking at having our own tutorial videos featuring the knowedge of some of our top players.

Zong-Yuan Zhao has just become the third Australian to achieve Grand Master status and will be awarded the Grandmaster title at the next FIDE Congress after scoring three GM norms in a short seven weeks. (ABC News, 1 February 2008)

In doing so, he overtook our own David Smerdon, who also has three GM norms but needs to win some more rating points.

Today we recieved the sad news that our club member Zoltán Mátravölgyi passed away on Tuesday the 5th of Feburary. Our thoughts go out to the family. The funeral ceremony will be held at 'The Great Southern Garden of Remembrance' 1774-1794 Mt Cotton Road, Carbrook at 3:00pm Friday the 15th of February.

Zoli as he was called at the club was born 23 of Januaray 1955. He was a character that liked to amaze us with his magic tricks. He loved his chess club and hardly missed a night in over 13 year. We will miss him very much.

Congratulations to our club member IM Stephan Soloman on becoming the 2008 Austalian Champion

congratulations to IM David Smerdon for scoring his 3rd GM norm in Paraduce, Czech Republic. Although David has scored the required norms, he still needs to get his rating over 2500 to be awarded the title and to become the third Australian grandmaster in history. David hails from Logan City and was a member of this club as a junior. We recently had the privelege of David playing in our Day of Knights tournament which he took out earlier this month
