Rudder Linkage
Conceptual Drawings
Isometric View
The steering yoke is hinged at the cockpit floor. Tiller extension type tubes connect the yoke to the tillers. When the yoke is moved by the helmsman, both tillers move simultaneously, turning both rudders through an equal angle, but in opposite directions. The rudder blade section shape is symmetrical about the mid chord axis. The rudders shaft axis is through the mid chord line. The rudders will generate an over turning moment because most of the lift is geneated towards the leading edge of the rudder blades, forward of the shaft axis. However, if the rudders are equally loaded i.e. if the boat is reasonably well balanced, the overturning moment of the rudders cancel each other out through the linkage system, and the helmsman experiences a neutral helm.
