Worked in Aberdeen on a newspaper called "The Bon Accord" (probably about 1890). Sang in the Dyce Church Choir. Became engaged to a girl called Alice Davidson. Went to London and worked on Fleet St (family legend says as the youngest editor on Fleet St). Met and married Elsie, had GMDL, then joined up and fought in the 2nd Boer War in Sth Africa (1899-1902), but bought his way out of army ?? (sister sent him money for passage home). He was back in Scotland in 1899 for EIL born on 12/2/1900. RL, EM, E, RM all born in Scotland. Family (except GMDL) emigrated to Tasmania in 1914. GMDL was studying medicine and stayed in Scotland with his paternal grandmother.
GML worked on a property in Ouse owned by Nicholas, then joined the AIF and served with the 40th Brigade in France during WW1. He was apparently repatriated as being over age at the instigation of son GMDL who was serving as a Major in the British Army. (Youngest Major in British Army - family legend). After the war he had a newsagency in Liverpool St cnr Bantz Arcade and was Smith's Weekly rep. which entailed submitting a weekly article, a task often performed by Reuben and Grannie. For some time he was a journalist on "The CRitic" (a photo shows him interviewing Mr. E Dwyer-Gray, who was Premier 11/6/ - 18/12 193?. He had been press secretary ?? to J.A Lyons, Premier from 25/10/23-15/6/28, and local gossip had it that the brains behind Lyons belonged to "drunken old Lobban". E remembered hearing ladies gossiping in Coogan's and saying this. GML was run down by a brewery lorry, ironically enough in Collin's St, outside Coogan's.
He had 2 subsequent accidents involving machinesof diminishing power ? and after being knocked down by a boy on a bike, took to his bed, where he remained for the last 13 years of his life, writing poetry, entering competitions and corresponding with a number of un-communicative celebrities.
GML died at St. Johns' Park on 11/6/1948 and was buried at Cornelian Bay Cemetery.AIF records show him as enlisting in 9/8/16 and returning to Australia 30/1/1918, 40th Batallion
