Elected Candidates
on record to support safe access via the Alder Link and bicycle infrastructure
for Park Orchards:

David Ellis: I have called and looked at the situation from
the Park Road and Alder Court ends and checked Council policy in the MMCLP.
I am 100% in favour of the link as proposed. Specifically what I will do when
in Council is follow up with Paul Molan and council officers to establish just
what are the 'ownership issues and physical constraints' that have prevented
implementation of the idea to date, to prioritise and identify how it can be
done, not reasons why it cannot.
In general terms too, I believe Manningham has to start planning around the
concept of 'walkable' (and 'bikeable') communities.

comments.

Graeme Macmillan: First, I am in support of the concept of
linking the cycling trails. The existing trails along EastLink are excellent,
and extend almost into the City. Second, you mention that the Council already
has a feasibility study planned, and therefore has the cycle trail on the agenda
and is considering it. You would be aware there are many infrastructure projects
in our area awaiting decision, including roads, drains, footpaths and reticulated
sewerage (which is a State matter through Yarra Water). I am also aware that
Warrandyte is also seeking extended cycle trails in their area. The King Street
group has also approached me about putting their road construction high in the
Council priorities. Without an full briefing on all infrastructure needs of
Manningham it is not possible to give a categoric response or promise other
than to say, if elected, I am totally sympathetic to your cause, and would seek
to incorporate all cycling trails high in infrastructure plans, and certainly
above many of the development projects the current Council is pursuing.
I am very concerned that the previous councils have become involved in major
developments at the other end of the municipality and have ignored basic needs
in the Mullum Mullum ward. I will seek to introduce Community Plans for each
community in Mullum Mullum, then engage with residents through those community
plans to prioritise their projects. I also believe previous councils have locked
away funds in cash reserves, inappropriate and unused assets and are funding
operations that are unnecessary. I will press for a full independent review
of Council operations similar to the Melbourne CC review in 2006, a redirection
of funding towards improving core infrastructure including bike trails and a
more transparent approach to decision-making at the community level.
