BACKING PLATE and 3 JAW CHUCK MOD. Pg 2

I had already premachined a bronze sleeve, semifinished on the inside diameter by about 0.5mm(.020 inch), that is undersize of course.

Here the bore has been machined out to give a .0015 inch interference fit. The recess for the ring is 8mm deep, the ring is about 9mm long. I have some Loctite applied and am ready to knock it in.

Have fitted the ring and am checking the face to see if the job moved during fitting of the ring. The face and bore proved still true so all is well so far.

The bush has now been machined to be a very close fit on the spindle spigot. I have also faced the bush and the face where the spindle matches up. The spigot and the mating faces are what effects the alignment and truth of the backing plate when it's tightened up, so these are two very important surfaces.

Piece of stainless steel bored, faced and being parted. I used stainless because I get second hand stainless pieces for nothing from pump shafts etc.

The ring is about 0.05mm(.002 inch) interference on backing plate spigot. Here it is fitted and ready for marking out, drilling and tapping.

I have drilled, tapped, drilled clearance and am now countersinking the holes for M5x.8mm countersunk socket head screws. The tapped holes do not go all the way through the backing plate.
