BALL TURNING TOOL Pg3

A stainless steel ball just finished being turned. I sharpened the other end of the tool steel piece to have a smaller contact face for machining the stainless, works fine but stainless has to be machined at a slower speed so it made the job a bit slower. I should have roughed off the corners before starting in with the ball turner.

After some filing with a long angle lathe file, some emery taping and a bit of polishing the stainless came up really well.

Couldn't help myself, just had to give her a bit of a buff up, now that's one nice shiney ball knob, but oh so heavy.

Tool steel is a bit slow on the stainless so am making a brazed on tip. Here I have brazed and filed the braze flat on a steel shank and a worn out tungsten carbide tip. The tip is the non-coated type, to braze the coated tips the coating has to be ground off first where the braze is going to go on.

Tip and shank now sweated together. A bit of pressure on the tip whilst the braze is molten ensures that the braze between the tip and shank is just a thin film.

Grinding down the tip on a silicon carbide wheel. Even though the wheel isn't very green, it is a silicon carbide wheel. Story is continued on next page.
