After machining the crust off and a fine cut across the face I measured around the hole to make sure this face was parallel to the other side, it was very close so that's good.

Facing across the face of the recess and now measuring to get the correct thickness, the critical thickness.

Dial indicator mounted on front rail so I can make accurate advance of the saddle and therefore the tool.

Main recess and clearance recess for the step on the degree ring. The recess to clear the step also has to be deep enough that the plate doesn't touch the top surface of the step on the degree ring.

I put a thin coating of blue on the ring then bolted the degree ring in place, I turned the plate slightly so as to mark the high spots on the bottom of the compound. In this pic I have already done a couple of assembly and scraping sequences. You can see that the blueing is getting fairly good. You can also see the concave part close to the neck as it has not marked with blue.

I have thinned down the blue even more now and as you can see the surface of the compound is coming up nicely.

Last assembly of the blueing process and screws tightened as they will be when I completely finish the job and the plate is fitting very good with a slight drag when turning it.
